Henri Jan E. van Oosten of San Marino is named honorary consul general for Thailand on the west coast. The designation marks Thailand's first representation in Los Angeles, tracing back to a 1949 visit and his career with the American Steamship Company in foreign trade.

Edwin Porges of 1584 Kensington Road died after a heart attack aboard a plane trip from St. Paul Minnesota to Chicago on November 21. Funeral and burial were in Chicago on November 23. He was traveling on business and was to meet his wife Joanna Porges in Chicago. He is survived by his wife and two daughters Mrs. Robert Marver of St. Paul and Jane Porges of this city.
The annual city wide Christmas decoration contest planned by the Business and Professional Association offers San Marinans a chance to brighten outdoor spaces this season. The event underscores the city’s noted festive atmosphere and community spirit.
Telegram from Santa Claus announces arrival in San Marino on Saturday morning December 22 at 10 a.m. He will visit EPA prepared headquarters there and stay until 4 30 p.m. to greet local children and distribute gifts. Return trip planned for Monday and Tuesday if possible.

San Marino and South Pasadena voted to dissolve their 31 year partnership and establish independent unified school systems. Bond measures failed by two thirds while Proposition two favoring unification passed 2444 1189 in San Marino and 1829 1429 in South Pasadena. Overall yes 3606 no 3474.
A joint meeting of the Alhambra and San Gabriel Republican Clubs featured a panel on potential Republican candidates led by moderator McIntyre Faries. Huntington School eighth graders rehearse two Christmas pageant performances on December 17 at 1:45 and evening of December 18 at 7:45 with tickets issued to parents.
Norbert H. Shorb died in Reno Nevada at age 64. He was connected to the founding San Marino through his father James de Barth Shorb and grandfather Benjamin Wilson. Surviving family includes wife Irene Geary Shorb and children Ramona Adams Bonita Johnson and James Shorb. His lineage links to General George S Patton via cousin Anne Patton. Graveside services were held at San Gabriel Mission cemetery. the Shorb home site later became Huntington’s mansion and art gallery.
Pack 1 completes an undefeated season with a 31-24 victory over Pack 4 to claim the San Marino Cub Scout football title. Key scores came from Dick Clarke Peter Roci and Downie Muir with interception returns and pass plays set up by strong blocking.
The San Marino Public Library announces a Christmas story hour for children ages four to ten on Saturday afternoon December 22 at 2 30. The program continues weekly each Saturday at 2 30 throughout the school year inviting all eligible children to attend.
