Pasqualito Sewer Contract Award Sparks Budget Dispute

The council met Wednesday to award Ridgeway Drive sewer work to C. K. Construction for 6335.00 after Engineer Harold A. recommended lowest bid. Protests cited cost, health hazards, and hardship from the project as residents argued against the deal and questioned frontage thresholds.

R. G. Kenyon Scores Again Nationally

R G Kenyon, advertising manager for Southern California Edison, earns second place in the Public Utility Ad-Views Socrates point score contest. Edison has placed highly for three consecutive years with nationwide entries from electric and gas utilities. The company uses newspaper ads in 170 papers across central and southern California to boost local dealer sales. Spike Kenyon is a San Marino resident honored by the industry.

Outstanding San Marino Building Boom Reaches 2 Million

San Marino's 1936 building total tops $2,022,710.24 with over 75 homes under construction by December. City Inspector George H. Crowhey notes a million-dollar volume reached by June 30, and new houses rise across Rubio, Mirasol, Oakleigh, Lorain, and other streets as permits are requested for additional projects.

Stoneman PTA Christmas Program Set for Tuesday

Stoneman PTA plans its annual Christmas program next Tuesday with Miss Freeman's third grade and other groups. Mrs. H. N. Rousseau chairs the event, featuring carols, gifts, and prepared toys for charity as the community gathers at the church for the tradition.

Philip Gresham Wins City Club Football Derby

Philip Gresham clinched the San Marino City Club Football Derby after 50 games with 34 correct picks. He won by one game over rivals including Jack James who tied for second with Chas Pearson and others at 33 wins. The championship cup will be presented at the January meeting with consolation prizes for the five runners up.

Judge Mackel's Father Dies in Los Angeles

James Mackel father of Judge James P. Mackel died Saturday in Queen of the Angels Hospital Los Angeles after a yearlong illness. He would have been 78 on Christmas Day. The judge rushed to his bedside and attended the end. Requiem mass was held at St. Paul's Church and burial at Calvary Cemetery. A native of Pomroy Ireland he lived in Los Angeles 54 years in contracting and building. Surviving are his widow Alice, sons James Vincent and John, brother Frank, six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

San Marino and South Pasadena Close Schools for Holidays

San Marino and South Pasadena announce a closure from December 18 to January 4. Christmas programs will feature at Huntington and Stoneman Schools with rooms decorated and students preparing gifts and songs. The board approved lighting for the deodar trees at both sites.

Kenneth Brown Collings son of editor will join his family over Christmas aboard the Santa Paula of Grace Line, arriving in Ensenada after a South American tour by air. A WWI Marine air corps day-bomber who rose to captain, he later wrote I Flew For The Hell of It about early aviation exploits.

Wild chase ends with Arcadia man jailed for drunken driving

George Teague of 1009 8th Avenue Arcadia was captured after a citywide pursuit. He collided with Sam G. Johnson at Huntington near Virginia, fled toward San Gabriel, and was held in Arcadia city jail on $250 bail awaiting trial. A sobriety test by Dr. E E Kinzer found him intoxicated, and damages to Johnson's car were ordered paid.

American Legion Auxiliary pot luck luncheon in Pasadena

San Marino Unit No. 239 met at 12 P M December 8 at Emma Perry's home in Pasadena. A pot luck luncheon was served and reports showed contributions to Child Welfare and Hospital Christmas gifts. Six Thanksgiving baskets were given to veterans' families. Next meeting set for January 12 at Edith Wood's home in San Marino.

Puppet shows at Studio Theatre celebrate holiday season

The San Marino Puppet Guild presents Christmas themed productions at the San Marino Studio Theatre after Destiny's Daughter ends. Matinees set for December 19 and 22 with full houses expected. Dickens Christmas Carol and The Night Before Christmas featured. A special December 21 performance will entertain Los Angeles Orthopedic Hospital children with refreshments to follow the show.

Light Operas To Be Given at Woman's Club

San Marino Woman's Club plans a December 16 meeting at 1 30 pm in the Henry Huntington School Auditorium. Members are urged to bring canned goods for the Philanthropy Guild.
