City Council member Paul Crowley announced plans to file for reelection in April 1994. In a Tribune statement he cited eight years in office, unfinished projects, and a goal to preserve traditional values. Suzanne Crowell has not decided if she will run.
Former SM resident Franco Cordova, 46, is named NASA chief scientist and senior scientific advisor. He heads Penn State's astronomy and astrophysics department, will take a temporary leave to work in NASA's Washington offices, with aims including Space Station Freedom and a unified agency mission. He earned Stanford(1969) and Caltech PhD(1979), and previously led LA National Lab Space Astronomy group.

State Senator Newton Russell has been reelected as the Senate Minority Whip by Republican colleagues a post he has held since 1986. He described the role as ensuring caucus support on key issues and alerting members to objectionable measures while guiding planning and strategy for the GOP.
San Marino High School holds a Kickoff Luncheon in the small gym on Saturday December 11 from 11 30 a m to 1 30 p m. Boys coach Kevin Hall will introduce coaches and teams while tribute honors Hall in his fifth season. The event features a catered box lunch at eight dollars per person with players, parents and the public invited. Boosters President Ken Drez notes recent upgrades and advertiser solicitation for the program. The varsity boys enter Poly Tournament, JV and varsity girls host Rosemead, JV sophomores head to the San Gabriel tournament, and freshmen host Glendora.
Bank of America partners with the USMC Reserve as an official sponsor of the 46th Toys for Tots program. The bank opens 1,000 California branches as toy collection sites for new, unwrapped gifts with final pickups by Dec 20 from 23 USMC Reserve units. Distribution is handled by social welfare agencies. Leona Warden, San Marino branch manager, urges public participation and notes convenient drop offs.
A trio of Russian journalists visited Judy Carter, the Bag Lady of San Marino, to learn about local environmental efforts. They toured Carter’s activities with the San Marino Environmental Network, filmed composting and recycling actions, and spoke with Carter during a network meeting for a two part TV segment.
San Marino High School seniors Cassie Destino and Taylor Peck direct a set of four student one act plays to be staged by freshmen and sophomores at Webb Theater, with performances planned for December 9 and 10.

San Marino police report two arrests tied to recent burglaries. One man was arrested for burglary of a Belhaven Road home on November 24 after a witness noted a suspect fleeing with bags and led detectives to a Monrovia man who returned property. The second man was arrested December 2 for investigation of burglary after coins rolled at Sanwa Bank revealed pennies. the suspects may be connected to prior bank crimes in South Pasadena and Sherman Oaks.
