A Tuesday fire caused about 22000 in damage to the interior of three offices at 1461 San Marino avenue in San Marino. The blaze, fed by heat and confined largely to the rear, took fire crews over two hours to extinguish with a suspected smoldering cigarette or appliance as the initial ignition.
Generous support from Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Bent of Cumberland Road funds a pipe organ for Pomona College men. Installed in Frary dining hall, it is restricted to informal recreation and not for classes. The Bents memorialize their sons, with Bent Foundation supporting botany professorship.
Myron Thomas announces S-D Day on December 15 1954 urging nationwide 24 hour traffic safety drive. He urges motorists pedestrians to follow traffic laws reduce accidents with personal responsibility and practical steps like keeping distance using proper signals and adjusting speed for conditions.
November building permits totaled 272824.74 dollars, down 235629.56 from October per Sophus J. Press. New residential permits add 163500 for three homes, 30000 for one office building, while alterations total 37337 and miscellaneous permits 10700. Plumbing and heating permits reach 31287.11. New homes planned by Hall Arcadia and Pickering Los Angeles are priced 55000 and 39000 respectively with eight and eleven rooms. Johnson Hacienda plans 69500 for a nine room home at Rosalind road. An office building at Huntington drive costs 30000 with eight rooms for Hazel Short.
The 1954 rainfall in San Marino reaches 2.50 inches by midyear, adding to a total that already tops last year’s 1.79 inches. A recent storm dropped .57 inches, contributing to the wet year.
Mayor Carson W Ide proclaims December 15 1954 as Safe Driving Day in San Marino. He urges residents and passers through to observe traffic laws for an accident free 24 hour period and to show responsibility for pedestrians and motorists alike.
Lynn B McClain of Twin Palms drive is named assistant comptroller of the American Telephone and Telegraph Company in New York effective January 1 announced by Pacific Telephone. A native of Sweetwater Tennessee McClain 48 has headed Pacific Telephone Southern California accounting for over 2300 staff and bills disbursements and other accounting tasks. He attended Davidson College and Emory University Law School before joining the industry in 1928 with Chesapeake and Potomac. McClain active in community affairs as division chairman of the Community Chest and adviser on California Institute of the Blind matters with the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce. he and wife Margaret have daughter Marilyn age 14.
The San Marino post office will stay open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. for parcel post business and stamp sales. Superintendent Marshall Lungren notes extended hours to improve service while money order and registry windows close at 1 p.m. on Saturdays.
San Marino Planning Commission schedules a public hearing January 5, 1955 at 8 p.m. to discuss Grace P Maxwell of Park Place variance request to add a library television room and reduce southerly yard from 12 to five feet and front yard from 50 to 48 feet to match adjacent property. The proposal was discussed at the December 1 regular meeting in City Council chambers.
Funeral services for Emma F Freeman widow of Welcome S Freeman were held at Turner and Stevens Co chapel. She died December 2 at her El Molino home. Entombment at Mountain View Mausoleum. Surviving sister Eda Hill of Schenectady NY. First school Christmas program at Anoakia on December 12 at 4 30 p m features Glee Club Junior High chorus led by Louis and Lillian Malone. Pageant directed by Mrs Herbert Teachout with listed cast. Manager designed manger scene by Edna Marriott Wilcocks. Silver Bells theme for Anoakia Christmas formal dance December 10 chaired by Colene Campbell.
The Principia dedication ceremonies in St Louis celebrate Brooks House funded by Mr and Mrs Percival Brooks at 175000. Plans include Marshall Brooks Library two stories tall with 200000 book capacity and faculty spaces. Huntington and Valentine school Christmas programs cited with PTA events and charity drives.
Funeral services for Mrs Crete McCracken who died December 3 at her Oak Grove home in San Marino were held Monday at the Freeman Chapel of the Pasadena Presbyterian Church. Survived by Frederick W. McCracken widower, son Harvey Hewitt, daughters Mrs John McLaughlin and Mrs Robert Sawyer all of Pasadena, brother Fletcher Skinner of New Canaan CT, sisters Mrs Blanche Skinner Adams of Laguna Beach and Mrs John Roberts of Pasadena.
The San Marino post office reports an $8,105.50 rise in November 1954 postal receipts over 1953. Total receipts for 1954 reached $19,364.86 vs $11,259.36 in 1953. Officials credit heavy stamp buying by commercial distributors for the growth.
Mrs Emma Moore Townsend of Bellwood road San Marino died December 3 at age 86. A Greensburg Indiana native, she lived in California 60 years and in San Marino 13. Survived by daughter Mrs Ned Connor and sister Mrs Effig M Atcheson. Funeral at Little Stone Church of Turner Stevens and Turner conducted by Rev Bertrand R Crist.
Roy L. Herndon II of Virginia Road San Marino was honored as a Scholar of the Second Rank at Yale University. He is among 15 students named to the honor roll. Herndon, a graduate of South Pasadena San Marino High School, is noted as Yale's second undergraduate academic award recipient.
