Public invitation to the San Marino Woman's Club Events and Literature meeting on Wednesday December 12 at 2 p.m. in Huntington Street Chattic 922. Edna Stearns Dayton will discuss world affairs and present reviews of notable plays and books.
San Marino Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star will install officers at the Pacific Temple on October 12 at 8 p.m. Worthy Matron-elect Mae Palse and Worthy Patron-elect J Aubrey Lyon will preside as the installation opens the ceremony.
A community church meeting reviewed the roles of the Bass Bisle Board of Trustees and Board of Elders as the governing bodies overseeing church affairs and future planning.
William L. Harrison, active in real estate since 1920, was named president of the San Marino Board of Realtors at the annual dinner Monday. He succeeds L. W. Diehl who retires January 1 after two successful years in office. The meeting also named 1946 directors and officers.
Tag Day patterned after Poppy Day will be observed on Saturday December 8 under Blue Star Mothers of America sponsorship. Mrs Robert Gregg of Alhambra Blue Star Mothers heads local tag sales as proceeds fund veterans rehabilitation and welfare.
Plans are complete for the San Marino City Club Ladies' Night at the Huntington Hotel ballroom on Friday December 14. Co chairs F Hixon and Julian R Besel promise a full evening with casino games, dinner, dancing, and prize auctions starting at 7:30 p.m. Guests receive script money to use in a featured casino and should reserve tickets through Randall Kerr at San Marino City Hall.
The San Marino Pasadena and surrounding PTAs report a successful fall in gathering. Clothing shoes and food were distributed to Home for the Aged South Pasadena Welfare and San Gabriel Welfare while Montana Highland Park and Matcavar schools received goods. The drive totaled many boxes of clothing and baby food and was organized by Mrs. Howard W. Seidler.
Colonel Hill has arrived back from the South Pacific after duty with the 13th Air Force and the 4th Phot Group in New Caledonia and Santo Espiritu. He earned an Air Medal and a commendation for outstanding service during the invasion of Munda and is planning a three week trip before spending Christmas with his parents in San Marino.
The Community Church Women host a Christmas program in mid December featuring Mrs Mary Hammond in a personification of Mary the Mother. A tea follows at Chaucer Road home with sopranos Mmes Milred Trillingham Adell Hendra and organist Dr. Douglas Wright Jr. The event includes old carols from various lands and a Christmas prayer by Dr. P Martin Baker and is open to all local women.
The Junior High hosts a Christmas play Thursday December 13 titled A Candle in the Forest directed by Miss Anne Spellby with Miss Gwen Cowan aiding scenery and props. Bert Rightmer leads the stage crew and choir under Miss Mildred Lewison and Mrs Elsie Vesed performing Angels Oer the Field and other carols. Marilyn Grogan stars as the mother with Don Durant as the father Susan Lansit Ricky Humphrey and Joan Klein in leading roles depicting class contrasts during Christmas.
Dr Rudolf Kirk, Rutgers English professor, spends a year at the Huntington Library editing one of the 17th century English texts. He continues prior work on Pepys and Howells and plans a new volume on Howells for the American Writers series with his wife Clara Kirk.
Final tribute was held Monday December 3 at the Church of Our Saviour for Albert E. Sears a San Marino resident for 20 years. Reverend Franklin L. Gibson officiated Pierce Brothers of Alhambra arranged. Interment followed at San Gabriel cemetery. Survived by wife Edith V Sears son Robert E Sears and daughters Katherine S Graham and Helen Sears.
The San Marino Garden Club gathers at Mrs Paul Meerut’s home on Adar Street at 10 a m Tuesday December 22 to hear artist and decorator Malfred Bryant Parks discuss Christmas decorations. Club members, led by president Mrs Russell E B Post, showcase festive ideas and a plant exchange promises attractive seasonal displays.
Mrs John F MacKinlay mother of Albert W MacKinlay of San Marino died Wednesday at Springfield Hill. Funeral Monday at Alexander's St Louis. Born Ottawa Illinois April 6 1851 Caroline Rebecca True attended Abbott Academy Andover and heard Lincoln Douglas debate in Ottawa. Survived by four of five children and two grandchildren. sister Ella True of Los Angeles.
San Marino police report a surge of complaints about dumping on vacant lots. Chief Glenn McClung urges citizen cooperation and notes dumping violates city ordinances. Owners may burn inflammable rubbish 6 to 10 am with a permit from the local fire department to avoid litter and disputes.
Charles Thomas becomes Honorary member of Girl Scouts Inc after a Westinghouse radio show rehearsal. Twenty five Pasadena Girl Scout Council members, including Troop 37 leaders Jon Haynes and Barbara Barns, attend as they learn about orchestration choral work and voice from Victor Young Ken Darby and Mr Thomas during the badge presentation.
Funeral services for Frank L. Apgar of San Marino were held at Little Stone Church with Dr P Martin Baker officiating. Interment followed in San Gabriel cemetery. Survivors include widow Elsie Flint Apgar two daughters E Gregor Van Haughten and Mrs Arthur J. Weidner one son Frank L Apgar Jr a sister Ella F Acken a brother George Apgar and five grandchildren.
Two minor wrecks occurred last Sunday in San Marino injuring no drivers. On Huntington drive three cars including a Reed of Glendale and Betty May Beaudreau of Caliente collided, while at California street and Sierra Madre boulevard a Franklin of Pasadena and George Stephen Tivy of San Marino crashed. all cars damaged with no injuries.
Elmer E Cooper father of Harold Cooper owner of H Cooper Sales Company died Sunday December 2 in South Pasadena. Born 1882 in Cleveland Ohio he lived in South Pasadena and San Gabriel for about 35 years. Survived by son Gene and daughters Adoree Marilyn June Harris and others. two brothers and two sisters. Services Thursday at 2pm at Church of The Recessional Forest Lawn Mortuary in charge.
