San Marino faces South Pasadena in the first varsity cage tilt on the SMHS campus at 8 p.m. Rodi Chalk Cooper lead the Titans with Peery Cottle and Gillmartin in supporting roles as San Marino aims to start strong after recent intraschool and Bee league success.

Morley Construction Company warned the Board of Education that completing the new high school may exceed the January 1, 1955 deadline by about 15 days due to labor troubles. Board members emphasized timely delivery and noted penalties for overruns may have attracted higher bids. Architect Herbert Powell’s firm earned an AIA merit award for the K. L Carver School.
P Cunningham, manager of the San Marino branch of Security First National Bank of Los Angeles, received an engraved copy of President Eisenhower's inaugural prayer from the Treasury Department for distinguished volunteer service as chairman of the San Marino Savings Bonds committee. The award was presented by M D Faugh on behalf of the Secretary of the Treasury and the Southern California Advisory Committee for Savings Bonds.
Mr and Mrs Norman Huff of Montecito Drive spent Thanksgiving at the Hotel Vosburg in San Jacinto.
Donations to San Marino’s Community Chest total $36,533, $3,122 less than 1953. Dr. Ben A. Patton, chair, notes several workers have not yet reported and future checks from AID and similar groups are expected. Final drive results will be shared at the December 13 Community Council meeting at City Hall.
San Marino police will wear a new look starting Monday as new uniforms arrive. Police Chief Robert Seares says the gear will resemble California Highway Patrol uniforms, with newly purchased badges and a redesigned shoulder patch for each officer.
Eleven San Marinans were named candidates for the 1955 county grand jury. Judges named nominees through limited selections, with the first 19 to qualify to be summoned after a January meeting. Names include John V. Vaughn Thomas J. Canning Willis M. Buchanan Lawrence E. Shepard Myron G. Thomas and others across San Marino and nearby areas.
San Marino judges selected Joanne Martin number 73 as one of seven Rose Queen finalists. The 18 year old San Marino High School student, born in Napa, moved here two years ago, and is pursuing Botany English French and U S History. She stands five seven and a half, weighs 132 pounds, with green eyes and brown hair. A San Marino High School sophomore brother Daniel attends the same school. The winner will be announced December 10 after a selection process from 1800 contestants.
Twenty five players on San Marino undefeated football team received letters at the third annual banquet held before 240 fathers and sons in the school cafeteria. Awards honored captain Art Hurd and others with gold trophies and recognitions for most inspirational and most improved players. Coach Victor Schwenk of the Bee squad presented two co captains and others, while Coach Charles Willard honored Dan Martin as captain and inspirational player. Guest speaker Mike Pecarovich urged obedience to parents and shared football stories. List of letter recipients includes John Albers through George Walker, plus managers Bill Merrill, Dean Stephan and Tony Pearson.
Mrs Mary Della Carpenter of Warwick Rhode Island died November 26 at her daughter Mrs Allen B Coon’s home in Winston Funeral services were held in Rhode Island.
After a slow start the fund drive for a Community Hospital near Santa Anita park in Arcadia has surged with substantial San Marino donations. Dr. G E Norwood says San Marinans are paying heavy checks and officials warn this is the last chance to secure a 2 000 000 hospital with a 581 000 government grant at stake.
San Jose clipping reports Charles O'Brien, a 60 year old mail carrier, dumping third class advertising circulars into a storm sewer. He waived hearing, posted 500 bail, and awaits Federal Grand Jury proceedings on charges of destroying and detaining U S mail.
Preparations for the San Marino swimming pool dedication moved from planning to practice as over 100 high school students rehearse for Sunday’s event. Recreation Director Howard Hites says the program will not be professional but will offer a strong preview of the pool’s community value. The dedication is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday.
The San Marino Business and Professional Association will award prizes to 11 homes or yards judged most attractively decorated for Christmas. A first prize and equal prizes for the next ten winners will be issued as purchase orders usable at local businesses. Judging occurs between Christmas and New Year’s Day across city districts.
A San Marino protest signature drive reports over 800 signatures collected so far through precinct chairmen cooperation. The effort aims to show broad support for the underlying cause and mobilize further action.
Virginia Wald of Chicago will sing with Dan Stewer's Society Orchestra at the San Marino City Club Dinner Dance held December 4 at the Huntington-Sheraton Crystal Dining Room. G Edward Hemphill hosts a "Name That Tune" surprise number with Virginia Ward assisting. Eugene S. Leonardson leads the reception with Marcus Godfrey Jr and Daniel M. The Rt. Rev. Stephen F Bayne Jr 44 year old bishop from Seattle will lead a six night preaching mission at St Lunds Episcopal Church San Gabriel boulevard north of Huntington drive from December 5 to 10 at 745 p m Each evening includes a hymn sing questions and prayers plus a lecture A coffee hour and Q A follow the service Bayne travels with his wife Lucie Culver Gould from New York and will be hosted by the local parish accordingly.
Fifteen San Marino Police Department members will take a three hour written exam on Saturday and an oral test the next weekend to fill two sergeant vacancies. One post is newly created, the other was left vacant by Sgt. Thomas Stewart's retirement.
Five San Marino Boy Scouts earned Eagle awards at the San Marino District court of honor held November 22 at Henry Huntington School. Recipients included Robert Douglas Gene Leonardson Philip Miller Gerry Whitney and Gary Hilliard of troops 354 and 355. The Eagle medals were presented by Thomas Batson of the Rotz club.
A burning cigarette falling from an ashtray damaged an upstairs bedroom in Louis C. Breer’s Wil son home Monday at 4 10 p m. Damage was estimated at 500 dollars, confined mainly to furnishings in one room.
