California governments spent 329.78 million for education in 1947, the largest share of 1.2915 billion in total state and local expenditures. Charities and corrections came second at 234.83 million, followed by protection costs at 157.22 million and unemployment and disability at 153.78 million. The report notes education has long dominated spending, with war years exceeding 30 percent.
Sergeant Tom Stewart recalls a prowler's four attempts to enter the Stewarts' Mercedes street home in Pasadena. Mrs Stewart chased him the third time and fired a 38 caliber shot but missed. He fled after the lights came on and has not returned. The Stewarts report no valuable items in the garage and no leads exist.
The San Marino Community Church Christmas Bazaar features a donated oil landscape by local artist Dr. Jack of 1176 Adair Street displayed in the Tribune window. The event runs from 2 PM with a 6:30 PM movie, magic show, palm reader, and booths run by church guilds to raise funds for the church building. Tickets for a home-cooked dinner at 5 to 7:30 PM are sold in guilds.
Four boys averted a regional fire at the Boy Scout cabin in Lacy Park on Sunday afternoon. John Stewart reported the fire at 1100 St. Albans road. Firefighters found the youths digging a firebreak with bare hands, stopping the blaze in a dry pine needle area behind the cabin. The boys were C. F. Gates, A. Jewel, Steve Holcomb, and George Morgan from Pasadena and Los Angeles areas.
Young Michael Mott suffered a deep gash over his right eye when his head hit a sprinkler while playing in his yard. Officer Foley activated the siren for the first ride to Huntington Memorial Hospital, and the boy did not cry until stitches began. Michael is the son of Mr and Mrs George Mott of 886 Chester Avenue.
Rotary leader Bill Lloyd will address the San Marino Rotary Club at noon today at Pierre's on the topic Do You Take the Time. Two weeks earlier Charles W. Wiggle of the National Federation of Small Business spoke to Rotarians on small business progress in Washington. San Gabriel Rotarians will join next week on December 9 to hear Dean Cromwell.
Ten Hebrew incunabula printed before 1500 are showcased at the Huntington Library for Jewish Book Month. The exhibit highlights rare works including Gersonides on the Pentateuch, a first Hebrew book printed in Portugal, a 1486 Job with commentary, and Kimchi lexicons. The display runs November 26 to December 26 with daily hours 1 to 4 30, except Mondays, and advance reservations required.
A 15000 square foot brush fire east of Southwestern Military Academy burned on Saturday. San Marino firefighters battled for over two hours. sparks ignited a awning and window at 922 Old Mill Road Pasadena and damaged the Garland residence at 1999 Oak Knoll. Oak Knoll fronts also suffered fire damage as officials warn stricter trash burning rules due to dry windy conditions.
The December issue features color pictures of Christmas decorations at Mr. and Mrs. Myrwyn Ball of 3019 Gainsborough Drive. Mrs Ball, a Valentine School kindergarten teacher, and her husband display wooden trees and a sleigh, with a star, snow flowers and painted angels enhancing their living room tree. The feature also shows Mrs Jordan’s decorations in her Chester Avenue home, photographed for the same Christmas spread.
Gary Boyd, 16, suffered a clean forearm fracture after a fall during a football game at Lacy Park. His mother, Mrs. Vroman O. Boyd of Vroman's Silver Shop, learned of the accident as she waited on a customer. The family lives at 1975 Sycamore Drive.
Building activity surged in November with a total valuation of 435 798 and 37 permits issued, including 18 new residences and two commercial structures. George H. Crowshey reported the year to date total at 5 793 642, about 2 000 000 above last year.
Insurmountable difficulties forced Mary city Kiwanis to cancel the annual New Year float. Leo Hepp, president, said the float would represent the whole city and not two groups. After January the full program will resume to allow committees time to work out scores of details.
At a Kiwanis San Marino luncheon, Jacob Chaitkin spoke on Russian Concepts of Freedom. The Pasadena attorney and Caltech Russian instructor argued Russia aims to conquer through conversion and asserts Russian freedom as a patron of just goods distribution, praising communism and denouncing honest political opponents.
Dr. Oliver W. Hunter died suddenly in his sleep early yesterday morning December 1. He is survived by his widow Danna Hunter of 2973 Shakespeare Drive. Funeral arrangements are being made under Turner Stevens Alhambra supervision.
Chief Glenn F. McClung orders strict enforcement of sign laws on vacant lots after a weekend crackdown. Realtors receive letters outlining a new policy permitting a single sign per lot only with owner permission, dramatically changing the streetscape.
William H. Hitchcock of 2138 Huntington Drive was elected president of the San Marino Realty Board at its annual meeting. Clyde J. Lanhart is vice president and George Thomas is secretary treasurer. Directors include Charles Hopper and William L. Harrison. The group discussed enforcing a zoning sign ordinance and considered a new rule to ban signs on vacant property. A letter from Chief McClung outlined sign limits and enforcement.
