As Sept 5 nears, San Marino Unified School District prepares for the new term. School Board President Robert Gayl notes an annual August rush as parents register new students. District office staff say packets must be picked up and then followed up by phone.
Westridge School begins its 83rd academic year with a Sept 5 convocation in Hoffman Gymnasium. More than 420 students from the Pasadena area attend, including 30 girls from San Marino. The school serves grades 4-12 in three divisions and adds a circus arts curriculum in the middle school. Fran Norris Scoble leads as head of school with Dr Mary Fauvre and Charles Schroeter heading the lower/middle and upper schools respectively.
San Marino School Board introduces Gary McGuigan as Huntington Middle School principal at the Aug 27 meeting. Superintendent Dr. Godley and PTA president Dana Marevich present him with a humorous survival kit. McGuigan, ex La Cañada assistant principal, pledges focus on kids and program excellence. Donna Stuart resigned as former Huntington principal. board also approves financial advisory changes related to general obligation bonds.
A San Marino group of Republican women and a supporter meet monthly to craft about 150 letters to Congress and the president. They discuss issues including Smog Check II and argue for citizens property rights, viewing pen as a potent democratic tool.
Nicole Biles, winner of the 1996 97 Rotary International Ambassadorial Scholarship, departs San Marino for a 16 month International MBA at SDA Bocconi in Milan. The USC graduate, class of 1994 with a degree in International Relations, represents the Rotary Club of Alhambra. She left during the first week of August.
A San Marino resident, Robert Fuller, challenged City Attorney Steve Dorsey’s conclusions on a two site ten million gallon reservoir project. He claimed key facts were misrepresented in the DEIR and criticized the official response while the council paused on detailed design to focus on safety and overall design parameters.
San Marino Unified School District appoints Gary McGuigan as Huntington Middle School principal after an interview process. McGuigan, currently an assistant principal for La Casfiada High School 7 12 program, brings counseling discipline and curriculum supervision experience. He previously served as assistant principal in the China Unified School District. The board announced the selection at a regular meeting on August 27 following a closed session on August 20.
La Cafiada High School plans to lose a valued asset as Gary McGuigan is praised by La Cafiada staff for his dedication to middle school education. Beverly Calister and Mike Gilliland cite his support, curriculum initiatives, and facilitation of eighth grade group projects. The 7 8 PTA Co President at La Caniada High adds to the chorus of high praise.
Assembly Speaker Curt Pringle saluted Majority Leader James Rogan on the Assembly floor praising his public service and humor. Rogan, elected to the California Assembly in 1994, previously served as a Glendale judge and LA DA prosecutor, and aims for the 27th Congressional District seat vacated by Carlos Moorhead.
Lisa Haley and the ZydeKats bring Cajun Zydeco music to Lacy Park on September 8 at 5:30 p.m. Gates open 4 p.m. Tickets include family admission for 15 and single admission for 5 in advance, prices rise at the gate. Tickets available at the San Marino Schools Foundation office weekdays 1 to 4 p.m.
