San Marino will keep its tax rate at $1.51 per $100 of assessed value for next year. City employees receive 2 percent raises, policemen and firefighters 4 percent, totaling $16,576 in increases. Raises take effect Sept 1 and aren’t retroactive to July 1. Next year’s reserves are projected near $50,000, after $110,000 was added this year.
Community notes detail a likely 14 to 15 cent rise in County tax rate while City of San Marino remains at 1.51 per 100 assessed value. Unified School District rates hover near 2.65 with possible increases for retirement funds bonds and junior college. Total tax bill is expected higher, though not as steep as earlier projections.
The San Marino Unified School District announces 28 new teachers for the upcoming fall term. San Marino High School adds several instructors including English drama coach and science staff, while Carver and Huntington Schools welcome multiple grade teachers and specialists. A quiet professional burglar prowled a residential area near the Huntington Library. The Longs on Oxford Road reported an unwelcomed visit between Friday night August 23 and Tuesday night August 27 while they were away. A Silver Star ceremony will honor Captain Kenneth N. Good posthumously at Fort MacArthur with Mrs. Good and their children among attendees. Brig. Gen. Patrick H. A air wrench valued at $140 was stolen from the lubrication room of the 2060 Huntington Drive service station, reported by owner Robert D. Hall.
The Tribune sets early deadlines next week due to Labor Day closing. Advertising and story submissions are asked by Friday afternoon while Tribune offices and staff spend the holiday with their families.
