Chief Glenn McClung reports limited cooperation from residents and business firms in restricting neon advertising lights. The ordinance targets outdoor lighting for badminton courts as well as flood and porch lamps with wattage limits and tilt rules to prevent upward glare. Police will enforce the dim out.
Dr. L. Grant Baldwin a leading San Marinan obstetrician and former president of the Colis P. Huntington Memorial Hospital medical staff has joined the Army Air Corps as a major. He is the 40th Huntington staff member to enter the armed forces, with Dr. Benjamin Dysart succeeding him as hospital staff executive. The Baldwins reside in Newport Harbor district near Santa Ana where Baldwin is stationed.
Registration for the general election on November 3 opens after the primary. The last day to register is September 27. Voters who recently moved or have not met residency requirements must register. Registrar Steinheiss will be at the Security First National Bank and at the court to assist. Call Sycamore 9-9213 for personal appointments if hours don’t fit.
Members of the Senior High School Church of the San Marino Community Church plan a Sunday evening program at the park. Harold Perry will speak on Nature Study with experiences from Yosemite Valley. Refreshments will be served after the program.
Maj. H. W. Peterson arrives from Washington to lead the Regional Air Priorities Control Office of the Air Transport Command with Los Angeles headquarters. He covers Southern California Arizona and New Mexico for personnel and cargo priority decisions. George L. Strehlke succeeds him as Pan American district manager for Southern California and seven western states.
The executive committee of the San Marino Civilian Defense Council will meet at 8 PM Tuesday in the Hall for the regular monthly review of defense activities. Air raid wardens distribute the information booklet detailing the program including Red Cross work, with a copy left at every residence to inform residents of city emergency preparations.
San Marino citizens under Mrs. Philip Gresham organize food and recreation for the army searchlight unit in the city. The Frank and Hart home at 1619 West Drive offers space for soldiers to relax visit play games and enjoy home comforts. August donors include Mrs. John L. Pearson Mr. and Mrs. Frank M. Brooks and others with September volunteers needed. contact Mrs. Gresham.
The Men of the San Marino Community Church invite all men and interested parties to an informal 7:30 p.m. meeting on Monday August 31 in the new activities room at 922 Huntington Drive. Dessert with coffee will be served. Dr P Martin Baker will moderate and all present are encouraged to participate.
Reinhard F Gudeman, who died Tuesday, will have Masonic services tomorrow at 1 30 p m at Wee Kirk o the Heather Forest Lawn Cemetery He was born in Germany and emigrated to the United States at age seven He lived in San Marino 13 years and later moved to his present home at 1920 Los Robles Two years ago He was active in banking circles and survived by his wife Josephine Jedofsky Gudeman a daughter Cecilia J Gudeman his mother Mrs Anna Guedemann and a sister Mrs Homer Kirkpatrick of Portland Oregon.
The Huntington Library and Art Gallery in San Marino will close for two months this September in addition to the usual October shutdown. The board cites war-related adjustments as the reason, with Dr. Robert A. Millikan as board chair explaining the plan.
George Bragonier, formerly of Euclid avenue, arrives in South Pasadena for a visit with parents after 18 months building Pacific Naval air bases on Wake Island and later Honolulu. He survived Pearl Harbor bombing day in Honolulu and bears souvenirs including shrapnel and the first Honolulu paper after the bombing. He questions mainland slogan and notes his US Engineers service.
San Marino will continue its regular postal service and deliveries per Pasadena Postmaster Fred G. Sutherland. The announcement notes comparable offices face mail curtailment due to staff shortages, while Santa Barbara reports difficulties in replacing workers called to service and a single daily delivery in the near term.
The OPA orders consolidation of nearby boards though the San Marino unit remains. The San Gabriel and Monterey Park boards may continue serving their communities in sugar rationing while the 2300 Huntington Drive office handles the heavier workload. No. 8 sugar stamps allow 5 pounds per person through October 31, a 10 week allotment not a bonus, intended mainly to ease grocer operations.
Jack Powell of 967 Roxbury Road leaves August 31 to join the Army Air Corps after receiving his commission as 1st Lieutenant. He trains first in Miami Beach, Florida, and hopes for Virginia as his permanent post. Powell has long served San Marino Cub Scouts as assistant then Cub Master. He is an attorney with Los Angeles offices and led the district auxiliary fire department. Mrs. Powell and son remain in San Marino briefly.
A large turnout in San Marino produced a decisive showing for Paul Warren on a nonpartisan ballot with 2565 votes versus 122 for Culbert Olson. Local results reflected statewide trends with results tabulated for Congress in the Twelfth District and other contests in the San Gabriel Valley.
Early returns from Tuesdays California primary show San Marino near fifty percent turnout, surpassing the state average. Warren leads Olson 2565 to 122 with other candidates in minor counts, while Lieutenant Governor race sees Pouser winning 1251 to 793 for Voorhis in San Marino amid broader political contrasts. Shuler lauded as a genuine reformer opposing socialism and the New Deal, challenging Voorhis in the public discourse.
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors ordered a net tax rate reduction of .1638 cents for 1942 43. The new basic rate is $1.3489 per $100 valuation, down from $1.462. The 1942 43 budget totals $77,819,308 with a surplus and higher assessed valuation, yielding a net tax take of $34,013,176, a decrease of $947,167. Charities and county institutions will consume more than half of the rate, with relief and old age pensions needing $.7269. Regular county functions cost $6,220 of the total rate.
Emulating 39 year old stage style the Hathaway Players of Alhambra present Aaron Shek from Punkin Crick with an olio of the citys best talent at Garfield School Auditorium on Friday and Saturday evenings August 28 and 29.
San Marino Red Cross Camp and Hospital Service seeks donations of easy chairs davenports radios bookcases and outdoor furniture to furnish day rooms at a coastal fort and a desert camp. Citizens should contact committee members led by Mrs Roy Ensign and Howard Seidell to arrange pickup. A Vultee day room for soldiers at the airplane factory has just been completed.
San Marino Red Cross reports over 100 women knitted in July. More volunteers are needed to meet high quotas for army and navy sweaters mufflers helmets and watch caps.
