San Marino Teacher Named Regional Judge for English Awards
Peggy Mabry, English teacher at San Marino High School, was chosen as a regional judge for the 1983 National Council of Teachers of English Awards in Writing Program. The competition, in its 25th year, recognizes about 90 high school seniors for writing excellence and helps with college admissions and financial aid. Across the nation, seven thousand students were nominated, with results due in October. Nominations come from high school departments, with state judging committees selecting recipients based on an impromptu theme and a best-writing sample. Police Prefer Hand Held Radar for Speed Enforcement
San Marino Police Department shows two radar devices a new lightweight hand unit and an older horn shaped model. The hand unit is self contained plugs into the cigarette lighter and can lock speeds of up to three cars in seconds. Calibration tests use tuning forks and electronic checks ensuring accuracy within a tenth of a percent. The unit works through glass and can track vehicles moving away from the cruiser. Officers train to use it and it helps avoid arguments with motorists.

Three Car Burglars Face Bad Luck
Three Altadena men were arrested after a car burglary on Mission and Euclid in San Marino. A green and white Ford Maverick carried the suspects, who grabbed a woman's purse from a Mercedes before fleeing. Police coordinated with San Marino and South Pasadena to arrest them Tuesday evening.
