City officials approve shifting police duty to 40 hours weekly, adding six patrolmen and raising base pay from 305 to 320 dollars monthly. Total new cost about 25 thousand dollars annually with increases effective September 1, affecting ten months of the current budget.
Services were held at St. Edmunds Episcopal Church for Mrs Jean Mitchell Deming of South Pasadena who died Sunday from polio. Rev Charles A Shreve officiated. She led St Edmunds Sunday School and Girl Scout activities and belonged to Zeta Tau Alpha. She leaves a daughter Lani Mitchell Deming and her parents Captain and Mrs Eugene C Mitchell. Directors Turner Stevens and Eggleston aided.
The Metropolitan Water District board cut the 1950 51 tax rate from 31c to 30c per 100 of assessed valuation for 1951 52. Of the 30c, 24c funds bond interest and principal on Colorado River aqueduct debt, while 6c covers operating and maintenance. The city budget projects about 580000 this year, with salaries rising and a 3c library cost increase. Pension costs also rise as more staff are added.
Mrs. Glenn Wilson of 2735 Devonport Road was rushed to Huntington Memorial Hospital Tuesday after a garage door rope broke. She fell on concrete pavement sustaining possible fractured spine and left arm injuries.

A turquoise parakeet wandered the west side of Kenilworth Avenue near Sierra Madre Boulevard, approaching and following pedestrians. Mrs. William S. Eggleston of 2395 Ridgeway Road rescued the bird with help from her 12 year old daughter Catherine. The parrot, starved and exhausted, now rests in the Eggleston breakfast room and appears content and at home.
City leaders state Huntington drive will not become a freeway and no detailed plans exist yet. Talks continue among San Marino, Alhambra, South Pasadena, Arcadia, and county officials to set a top policy and coordinate reengineering with local traffic as the priority.
The San Marino Kiwanis Club held Goodwill Day aiding about 450 physically handicapped workers of Southern California Goodwill Industries. President Frank W. Harman urged members to bring donated clothing from home and called it the club’s first Goodwill Day with plans for future support. Leo Hepp, a club member, serves on the Goodwill board.
The Saturday Evening Post August 25 article by Scholer Bangs details Paul MacCready Jr. of Los Robles Avenue and Bob Symons of Bishop California riding the Sierra Wave in a sailplane. It notes William S Ivans Jr. of La Mesa California reaching 42 100 feet aboard a single place sailplane setting a world altitude record.
Verne Orr of 1381 Cambridge road reported a burglary Friday morning. Several articles were missing, Orr told police.
San Marino branch of Security-First National Bank will open Fridays 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. starting tomorrow. Manager Paul Cunningham said regular hours remain 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday and Saturdays are closed. The change adds Friday convenience for customers and merchants seeking later deposits and change, with all departments staying open to 6 p.m. on Fridays.
Rotary Club members at Pierre's host an interview with foreign students from Claremont College. Dr. E C Thompson will lead the session explaining the Foreign Student Program. About 1000 exchange students at 21 American colleges from 14 countries participate in the program.
Summer reading activity draws 65+ youngsters at San Marino Public Library. Winners finish ten books for certificates and will receive their awards Thursday afternoon September 6 under the library trees from 3 to 4 PM.
The San Marino City Council moves toward a voter approved animal ordinance after years of discussion. Mayor Bell plans a citizens committee to study proposals and present a draft for a municipal election vote for final ratification.
Colonel William H. Fellows of 2895 Shakespeare Drive received the Legion of Merit for his work with the Far Eastern Air Force in Japan during the Korean conflict. The award was given at Travis Air Force Base California by Col. Bryson R. Bailey. Fellows was recalled to active duty in July last year and went overseas with the 452nd Bombardment Wing in October, commanding the Air Base Group and helping establish an air base in Japan and an advanced base in Korea from which B26 bombers operated.
Senator William F. Knowland will arrive from Washington D C to address Pasadena at Brookside Park Friday evening September 7 under the sponsorship of the Pasadena Republican Club. A San Marino Women’s Republican Club cooperation, supper at 6 30 p m, entertainment, and the senator's talk follow. Reservations may be made through Mrs Blanche Ford Williams Pyramid 1 1964 or Pasadena Republican headquarters.
South Pasadena San Marino Junior High announces new student registration on September 4 and 5 from 9 to 12 and 2 to 4 daily. Six A students from South Pasadena elementary, eight A’s from Huntington, and returning Junior High students need not register unless a program change is desired.
At the September City Council meeting a public hearing will discuss amending Zoning Ordinance 346 to permit fraternal lodge halls in the C-1 commercial zone. Current wording does not exclude or include edge halls. Residents worry a lodge hall could be built under the existing ordinance, but officials see no objection and seek clarification to avoid future misunderstandings.
Local cats in the San Marino area have been poisoned again in the past week. Residents report several pets harmed within the zone bounded by Santa Anita Avenue Sierra Madre Boulevard California Street and Robles Avenue.
City Clerk E R Kerr said the final payment on the City Hall bonds will be made in January, ending the need for tax money to fund the bonds. Authorized in 1922 for 45 000, semi annual payments of 1 500 have been made, with the last one due January 1. The 1922 interest rate was five percent while recent bonds carry one and one half percent.
