Andrew Barth announced his bid for the San Marino School Board on August 7 after community encouragement and two Tribune commentaries. He cited a commitment to neighborhood schools and governance as core aims, saying he would represent San Marino’s best interests and bring useful board experience.

LA County Supervisor Michael Antonovich spoke to the San Marino Rotarians on funding for a new county hospital and the broader budget strain from state mandates. He warned Sacramento and Washington regulations lack funding while term limits hinder representation. Rotarians asked questions as he discussed difficult medical and indigent care costs and ongoing budget pressures.
Former SM Major Leaguer Gott, who grew up in San Marlon and has two children with autism, led a summer clinic at East Altadena Little League field with Education Spectrum. The couple, active in the SM Alumni Association, offer ongoing sports and educational programs for children with developmental delays and autism. Space is available for SM residents to sign up their children.
A group of 130 youths and 34 staff, some from San Marino, left Saturday for YMCA Camp Round Meadow in the San Bernardino Mountains. At 7000 feet, the eight day program includes horseback riding canoeing swimming archery rock climbing and outdoor cooking and camping skills. Bob Warnock, former executive director of the South Pasadena-San Marino YMCA, said the trip aims to teach YMCA values and help youths develop leadership and group membership skills.
Three SMHS alumni, Zuckerman Hsu and Cheng, began their six week ride from Beijing on June 23 to raise funds for the Asian Pacific Family Center youth counseling program. They rode over 1,500 miles facing police detentions illnesses and typhoons, with health struggles from stomach pains to influenza and pollution related illnesses.
Councilman Gene Dryden says the so called 20 13 plan for San Marino was not shelved and that the city advanced several recommendations from the seven year task force. He cites annexation discussions as costly yet some areas benefited from sewer tie ins and continued evaluation followed the plan submission. The business committee urged beer and wine in city restaurants but the planning commission drafted related ordinance provisions.
Labor Day weekend traffic warns of 500 potential fatalities on US roads. Joseph M. Kaplan of the Greater LA National Safety Council urges safe driving: no drinking and driving, use a designated driver, inspect vehicles, plan trips, stretch and switch drivers, allow extra time, wear seat belts, harness children, and use proper car seats. Buckling up can halve fatalities.
San Marino residents and others may obtain free KidCare Photo IDs for children at SGVLC on 3160 E Del Mar Blvd Pasadena. The event runs 9 to 11 30 a m on Saturday Aug 23 limited to 150 children. For details call Lorraine Hernandez at 796-6115.
The 1997 American Express Retail Index reports teens and parents will spend about 396 dollars on back-to-school items. Parents spend 307 dollars while teens contribute 89 dollars, with 65 percent of parents planning teen shopping alongside.
