San Marino City Council approved a new general tax rate of 1.46 per dollar, up 11 cents from last year, to fund salaries for all city employees with raises ranging from 18 to 40 dollars monthly. The 1952 levy totals 476,417, up from 419,553 in 1951, driven by reduced police fines permits and licenses.

The Metropolitan Water District Board and Controller Albert W. McKinlay reduced the tax rate from 30 to 28 cents per $100 of assessed valuation for 1952-53. Board Chairman Joseph Jensen said the two cent cut was ordered despite higher future money needs to retire Colorado River aqueduct bonds and ongoing investments from recent district annexations.
South Pasadena Unified School District officials debate the high school contract terms for 1952-53 with a proposed ADA figure at 1090 and total costs near 419000. The board rejects the present form and seeks safeguards before approval, with a tentative payment of 360 per ADA and audits.
Henry Huntington Library announces publication of The Indians of Southern California in 1852 by Don Benito Wilson. In Huntington School badminton girls doubles first Nancy Dennis and Margaret Altshuler. singles winner Virginia Byers with Altshuler and Helen Carter tied for third. Fred Nelson won boys singles. Denny DePry and Gordon Brownlee took second and third. Ping pong April Hagenbaugh won blue ribbon with Mary Jo Hoffman second and Sandra Carter and Merry Wright tied for third.
Sunny Slope residents are invited to a Board of Education meeting to discuss locating an elementary school at the southeast corner of San Gabriel Boulevard and Huntington Drive. The session will address the petition against the site and is set for 8:30 p.m. in the Huntington School cafeteria.
L Hartley Smith has tendered his resignation as a member of the Recreation Commission. The City Council accepted it with regret and thanked him for his outstanding work as chairman during the last year. He retires to allow another San Marinan to devote time to the expanding city recreation program.
Harold Townsend, chief U. S. government engineer abroad since WWII, speaks on Waste in Government Spending Abroad at the San Gabriel Young Republicans Club meeting on August 28. Desserts at 7:30 p.m. business starts 8:30 at Mrs. Robert Allan’s home 1560 Charlton road, with a skit by Tom Reily and Jim Fullerton.
The Tribune reports the new traffic ordinance known as Ordinance 491 has become law. The reform aims at uniform traffic regulations across municipalities, with the final draft completed after more than a year of work.
The sanitation district board approved a tax rise by two and a half mills. District No 16 covering Alhambra and San Marino will levy 0.1424 dollars per 100 of assessed value, up from 0.1399 last year.
Andrew Dunlap and McClarty Harbison were reappointed to the Library Board of Trustees for a new three year term. The council approved the action at the most recent meeting.
Over the past week a single thief removed four coin boxes from automatic soft drink machines along the drive. The thefts occurred in the same manner indicating the culprit has knowledge of these devices. Police continue to investigate.
George C. Fetterman died last Saturday at his home 922 North Garfield Avenue Alhambra after forty years in the area. He was born in Cleveland Ohio and is survived by Rosa Fetterman his wife Audrey Perin his daughter George E. Fetterman Long Beach Clarence W. Fetterman San Marino Dr Roy A. Fetterman South Pasadena two sisters Pauline Davis Kate Bouchard both of Cleveland Ohio.
City figures released by City Clerk E R Kerr from the County Assessor show San Marino's total assessed valuation rising to 32 631 340 for the year marking a second straight increase of about 1 500 000. Land value rose modestly by 38 140 while improvements climbed 1 300 000 and property values increased 210 180. Public utilities gained 38 050 though real and personal property fell nearly 100 000 from 1951.
Seomeenna announces a 24 hour emergency medical service for area residents. The service uses the emergency number Sycamore 60101 and guarantees a doctor to reach you promptly if your personal physician is unavailable. The association spokesman urges arranging a personal physician now for any emergency.
