San Marino assigns 1953 54 assessed valuation at 34 446 200 for tax purposes, up 1 002 810 from last year. Land values dip 21 120 while improvements rise 914 940 and personal property grows 153 470. Public utilities add 23 010 pushing total for tax rate to 34 446 200.

United States Senator Thomas H. Kuchel will visit California during the upcoming congressional recess with San Marino on his itinerary. He will open offices in Los Angeles and Sacramento to handle public business and will speak at events in Sacramento Anaheim Stockton and other locations. He plans to meet citizens and discuss state and national issues while in the state.
Malcolm F. Swall a Navy air man mechanic at San Diego received a Navy commendation for alertness on July 29 during a sentry duty when he heard a call for help in the San Diego channel area. His action prompted crash and rescue facilities and the Coast Guard to save four youths from a becalmed sailing craft off Shelter Island. Mary Mann daughter of yacht champion Bob Mann was among those rescued. Swall has served since May and previously attended the University of Colorado Boulder.

San Marino Unified School District asks all new students who moved in since June and have not enrolled for fall to register by August 28. Principal Walter Dingus says the rule targets ninth and tenth year students and registration is at the principal's office 1665 West Drive. Pre enrollment is encouraged to prevent class overcrowding. those already pre enrolled need not contact the school unless changing subjects.
The City Council re appoints Mrs R G Kenyon for a three year term as a member of the Recreation Commission.
San Marino reduces city tax to 1.45 dollars per 100 assessed valuation after an adjourned council meeting. At the same session a special resolution raises all city employee salaries by an average of five and a half percent.
Commander G H Kronmiller named technical assistant to Charles H Smith Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Air after a California inspection tour. Kronmiller, Annapolis graduate with Caltech aeronautical training, is based in Washington DC and married with home in Arlington Virginia. He visited his San Marino mother Rose D Kronmiller during a two year absence.
Mayor Carson Ide and City Manager C. E. Martin join the State Board of Equalization hearing on Gil bert Hemming’s on sale liquor license. Two San Marino citizens and League of California Cities representatives expected. If denied, appeal possible within 15 days with October review in San Francisco.
San Marino businessman James H. Eberle sustained a basal skull fracture when his car was struck by a red light runner in Colorado Springs. He was en route from Pasadena to Brighton visiting his brother R. W. Eberle and is hospitalized at Memorial Hospital with plans to transfer to Brighton and then return to California in mid September.
UCLA Library acquires 225 volume Heilbrunn Spinoza collection from Amsterdam dealer R Heilbrunn, augmenting the 1300 item Abraham Wolf Spinoza collection bought two years ago. Librarian Powell cites near perfect complementarity. Gifts from Frank M. Vanderhoof and Friends of the UCLA Library funded the purchase along with Regents support. UCLA also added an 18th century Spinoza oil painting, a copy of the Wolfen buttler portrait from 1665.
In the San Marino Summer League PTA Fathers beat City Club 10 to 8 for their first win. Rotary Kiwanis then edged PTA Fathers 11 to 10 in an extra inning thriller, signaling a tense end to the season with Recreation facing City Club next.
Ladies of the Lions Club were feted at a meeting at 2020 Huntington Drive with Lex Christensen entertaining. Members and families plan a Sunday trip to Lake Arrowhead as guests of Mechaniel at their moon lodge near the North Shore Tavern.
Jack W. B. Stanley of 2828 Fleur drive was last week elected vice president of the Los Angeles Chapter of the National Association of Cost Accountants.
