The Japan Business Association hosted three San Marino teachers for a 17 day trip to Japan, the 20th year of the program. About 400 California educators have studied abroad in Japan funded by the association with additional local support. Participants Melanie Arms Sylvia Oberlander and Rose Pursley toured schools and factories and engaged in discus sion groups on Japanese and American relations. The program also donated $1,000 to the district for a new computer in the curriculum laboratory.
Rutherford argues that a mix of experience and a businesslike approach strengthens the school board. He emphasizes fiscal prudence, strategic planning, and stakeholder engagement as key benefits for district governance.
Dr Gene Platz a retired El Monte Union educator seeks one of three open seats on the San Marino School Board joining six others. Platz cites his 40 years in EMUHSD and current work as consultant and Azusa Pacific adjunct, aiming to aid educational services finance grants and site management. Incumbent Bruce Rutherford runs for reelection citing board experience and a business perspective.

The body also moves to limit annexation attempts by unincorporated areas and approves diagonal parking in the Mission District at a cost of 10,500 dollars with half funded by local businesses.
