The San Marino assessed valuation for 1954 55 is 35 157 370 up 714 110 from last year with land gains 4 280 and improvements 620 740. Net value climbs to 33 260 190 while total tax rate value reaches 34 349 830. unsecured personal property dips to 807 540.
The City Council approves a fiscal year 1954 55 budget totaling 780 695, up 33 938 from last year. Tax revenue rose by 10 377 while 23 562 came from savings in the 53 54 budget. General fund rose to 616 644 from 583 995, library fund to 85 004, retirement fund trimmed to 50 758, bond redemptions down to 28 287, total last year 746 756.
San Marino prepares to curb truck traffic with a Huntington drive widening plan halted after City Council rejects sharing costs with the Board of Education. An ordinance limits trucks over 4000 pounds citywide except Huntington drive, with fines up to 500 dollars and six months’ imprisonment possible. Deadline and page notice to continue.
Robert S. Seares, Pasadena assistant chief, will assume San Marino’s police chief post on September 7 after a screening of more than 40 applications and interviews with several candidates, per city officials.
Charles E. Martin announced Seaves as head of the San Marino police department after a council confirmation. The council kept the city tax rate at 1.45 per 100 and approved a four percent salary increase for most employees, with specific raises across police, fire, park, and street departments.
San Marino members of the Young Republicans gather at City Hall judge's chamber at 8 p.m. Tuesday August 24 for their first regular meeting since the primaries. The Red Web, produced with several government agencies to educate the public about communist activities in the United States, will be shown. Frank Turnbull, Kuchel re election chairman, will speak.
The Business and Professional Association of San Marino plans to report parking space details to the City Council. In a letter sent by president Kirby Lesh, the group asks office and shop owners to submit the number of parking spaces on their premises.
Herbert Hoover Jr is named Under Secretary of State succeeding Gen Bedell Smith. He joins San Marino natives Thomas Pike Preston Hotchkis H C McClellan and Judge Stanley Barnes in a wave of officials headed to Washington. Hoover, born in London, studied at Stanford and Harvard, later leading oil and geophysical firms and serving as Iranian crisis adviser.
Kiwanis International sponsors Kid's Day on Saturday September 25 in San Marino with the theme Build for Tomorrow. The sixth local observance and first under full Kiwanis sponsorship are organized by James Mild and a committee including Gene Hornaday Alfred Allen John Bullard Sylvester Eggert John Schmitz Malcolm Swall and Hiram White. Kiwanis President Roswell T. Allison says Kid's Day is the sole public fund raising drive for Kiwanis youth work, its main aim for 39 years.
Services were held at Little Stone Church of Turner Stevens for Jessie Faye Maas of 2611 Circle Drive Newport Beach. A Ute Iowa native and California resident 50 years she passed August 15. She belonged to Eastern Star Los Angeles Tweedy Lake Gun Club and San Gabriel Country Club. Survived by daughter Mrs R L Geiler three sisters and three grandchildren Rick Denny Gretchen Geiler.
Kindergarten-age children may be registered at three grammar schools on Thursday September 9 from 9 am to 4 pm. To qualify, a child must be four years nine months old as of September 1 and birth certificates must be shown. Registrations at Carver School and Valentine will be led by named staff. additional information is available from the office of E. C. Neher.
September 9 is final day to register for the November 2 general election. Los Angeles County residency rules apply. Absentee ballot applications may be filed between 20 and 5 days before election day. San Marino registration sites listed with contact numbers.
Five youths led by Charles Burlew Bobby Kenyon John Hollern and Michael Stone collected cold drinks to raise funds for polio relief and personally inquired at City Hall where to donate. They listed addresses of family homes on Ridgeway Lorain and Lorain roads.
In San Marino during the week of August 11 through 17, the Police Department issued 238 traffic citations as part of ongoing safety efforts. The peak day was Friday with 44 citations.
Members of the Business and Professional Association found a misleading front lawn sign at San Marino High School claiming a three million dollar project. The notice was misplaced. the sign actually referred to a new electric scoreboard donated by the association for about 1500 dollars, with completion expected in early 1955.
The July 22 Tribune column misattributed a city ambulance donation to Stanley Bent. The ambulance was actually a gift from the San Marino Woman's Club, and the paper apologizes to the club for the error.
The west side of Sierra Madre boulevard will be regraded and resurfaced in weeks. The city awarded Osborn Company a $10,131 contract to resurface from Robles avenue south to San Marino, with traffic reverting to two way in the block.
