The city’s official assessed valuation rises to 27,016,645 for 1948-49, up 1,569,410 or over six percent. Real estate leads gains with vacant land shrinking as homes rise. real estate now 10,282,675, personal property up 80,000, public utilities up 35,450. County Assessor report delivered to City Clerk E R Kerr outlines the tabulated changes.

Frank R Taylor of Gainsborough Drive held a 29 point cribbage hand with jack hearts and three fives, cut five hearts as starter card to make the perfect setup. Max Sommers and Maurice Jones Jr. witnessed the rare hand, while Taylor needed only two points to go out.
South Pasadena San Marino High School opens registration for new district students on September 11 12 3 from 9 to 12 and 2 to 4 daily. Six A students from South Pasadena elementary schools 8A from Henry Huntington School San Marino and those who attended Junior High last year need not register unless a program change is desired.
H F Holley of 2474 Sherwood Road urges City Council to study county disposal programs and have residents fund a municipal trash, rubbish and clipping disposal project as costs shift to taxpayers amid ongoing city efforts to resolve the smog and burning problems.
The City of San Marino received a blanket-coverage fire insurance policy for five years on a total valuation of $245,000. City hall is insured for $48,000 with contents at $6,000, reflecting increased property values reported by Scott & Company to the city council.
Franklin Walker of Mills College studies how 1815 to 1915 cultural growth shaped California through place names. He notes Hollywood’s promoter era origin, Pasadena’s synthetic Indian roots, Lamanda Park’s naming after Amanda Rose, Pomona from the Roman goddess, and Orange County naming. Walker holds Huntington Library fellowship under Rockefeller grant and will resume work this summer before returning to Mills College.
In accordance with Governor Warren's proclamation South Pasadena San Marino High School officials will assist with draft registrations. State Director K. H. Leitch issued orders authorizing the school to accept registrations. Dr. Elmer E Erickson said the high school will set up facilities from August 30 to September 18 under local draft officials supervision and oversight. Registration starts with 25 year olds on day one and 24 year olds on day two, continuing down the line.
Armin Thurnher, city parks superintendent, learned from nursing volunteers Miss Bent Singer and Miss Bent Singer that his sister Ida in Dornbirn near the Austrian Swiss border is well despite lean rations. She is helping family and neighbors as relief aid reaches the region, with Thurnher and other donors sending food packages.
Julie Sampson, unseeded, defeats Connie Driscoe of Santa Monica in Griffith Park Los Angeles to win the Girls' Junior Singles National title. Stewart of San Marino loses a heartbreaker in the National Men's Singles final after a late ankle injury.
Townley W. Bale of Dean Witter Company in Los Angeles will become manager of a new Seattle office opening around October 1. Bale, with the firm since 1931, will move from San Marino with his wife and three children after finalizing affairs in Los Angeles. He is currently in Seattle arranging space and staff.
San Marino police report a quiet week with few incidents beyond normal traffic citations for minor offenses. Residents are warned to lock doors and garages before leaving town as officers have found many homes and stores left open during the summer.
Pacific Telephone official C H Reed advised Arcadia and El Monte callers to use new prefixes for Arcadia Dougas 7 and Forest 8 0 in El Monte, replacing the old black letter and red 0. The San Gabriel office launch restructured about 6500 Atlantic numbers while 6800 Arcadia and 9900 El Monte handsets shifted.
The city fixes the general tax rate at 89 cents this year and 86 cents next year, citing higher building valuations and increased revenue from other sources.
