Captain Pickerel Reported Killed in Action Over South Pacific
Mrs. David Lane of 385 Monterey Road received word July 31 that her son in law Captain Pickerel of the Marine Air Corps was reported lost in action. The South Pacific pilot had left for overseas in February and recently flew a Corsair. He is the husband of Mrs. Harold Pickerel and the father of Pamela Harriet born July 23.

Col William J. Fox commander of the U S Marine Corps Air Station El Toro receives the Purple Heart for injuries suffered during a January 31 1943 night bombing raid on Guadalcanal. He organized and built Henderson Bauer Sailer and Ney fields with Marine Navy Seabee units. His civilian career included city engineer roles in South Pasadena and Los Angeles County.

Gordon L. McDonough predicts a 12 cent reduction in Los Angeles County’s tax rate for 1943 44 from the 1942 43 level of 1 3489 to about 1 22 after the budget actions on August 24. Navy V-12 Students View Huntington Exhibit
Six Cal Tech Navy V 12 cadets visited the American Navy exhibit at the Huntington Library and Art Gallery on Sunday with Lt Comdr Eugene W Mantel and Lt Miles E Morgan. The display traced the Navy's history from 1776 to the present war and honored America's naval heroes.
