City Clerk E R Kerr released figures showing San Marino’s total assessed value for the tax rate at 36,043,380, up from 34,349,830 last year. The gain stems from gains in land and improvements, with utilities and unsecured personal property also rising.
Private funeral services for Miss Lucile Helen Treff of Loraine Road who died August 11 were conducted by Turner Stevens and Eggleston, South Pasadena. A native of Los Angeles she lived in the area all her life and spent 20 years as a teacher and counsellor at Montebello Senior High School. She leaves a sister Mrs Richard E Vollrath and a nephew, both of San Marino.
Lowell Hammond, a San Marino realtor, caught the largest albacore Sunday during a 75 mile offshore trip with 18 San Marino City Club members. His 23 pounder topped Randy Kerr who followed with a 22 pounder as City Clerk.
Funeral services for Robert Pat Self of San Diego who died in Bakersfield August 12 included rosary in Alhambra and a requiem mass at St Therese Catholic Church in Alhambra. A Louisiana native, he lived in California 28 years and is survived by his wife Mary Elizabeth two sons Robert Jr Campbell and other relatives. Burial was at Resurrection Cemetery.

Mrs Flora D Hill of Coolidge drive San Gabriel died August 12 a native of Shelby county Indiana. She had lived in San Gabriel 15 years. Survived by husband Harry K Hill daughter Mrs W L Mizelle of Sacramento son Wesley G Palmer of San Gabriel two sisters Mrs Jess Swaney of Long Beach Mrs Arch Robertson of Durango Colorado and three grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday with burial in Oak Park Cemetery.
Street Department plans three seal coat projects on Oak Grove Shenandoah and Orlando roads with costs around 3500 1500 and 2000 dollars. Garfield avenue repaving by Vido Kovacevich at 16000 dollars city share. Virginia road north of Huntington drive may be resurfaced later and overall program totals about 30000 dollars with funding from South Pasadena and city funds.

Charles Costarella, 32, director of the San Marino high school music department, was named director of the Sheriff’s Boys Band by Sheriff E. Biscailuz. He replaces Tom Walker on leave. Costarella, former Glendale Symphony Orchestra member, leads a band that serves county civic events and will perform at the Sheriff’s Rodeo in the Coliseum.
A San Gabriel church reports a burglary at San M Congregational Church. A rear window was broken and cash totaling 26 dollars was stolen: 11.79 from petty cash and 14.72 from the flower fund. Entry occurred between 1 30 p m Sunday and 8 am Monday per Rev Bertrand R Crist.
Florence van Wingen wife of Nico van Wingen of Pasadena died August 10 after a private funeral held under Utter McKinley Reynolds and Eberle. She was a native of New York and is survived by son Rudolph P. van Wingen, her parents Mr and Mrs Gilbert B Jansen of Pasadena, and brother Gilbert B Jansen Jr of San Diego.
Robert S. Hogg, formerly community secretary for the East Pasadena San Marino YMCA, is named youth director of the San Marino Community Church succeeding Rev Kennethrant. A Worcester native and Southern California resident of ten years, he will lead about 700 youths and families, starting September 1 in San Marino.
The San Marino Unified School District will open classroom doors for registration on September 8 and 9. County superintendent C C Trillingham of San Marino says school activity starts September 12 and runs to June 13, 1956, with 176 instructional days and vacations on Veterans Day Lincoln’s Birthday Washington’s Birthday Memorial Day Thanksgiving Christmas and Easter. The first semester ends January 27.
Dr Henry F Barnewott 58 of Euclid Avenue Pasadena died Saturday. Funeral services were held Tuesday in Pasadena with burial at Mountain View cemetery. A noted sportsman and dentist, he was a charter member of the Pasadena University Club and affiliated with Pasadena Post American Legion Anandale Golf Club Ducks Unlimited and professional societies. Born in Centerville South Carolina, he moved to Pasadena as a child and attended the University of Southern California joining Delta Sigma Delta. He served in the Army Dental Corps in World War I and practiced in Pasadena since. Surviving are his widow Margery Elizabeth Barnewell a daughter Margery Gruenau his father Henry F Barnewell Sr a brother John Barnewitt and a sister Mrs Maria Means.
Contractors Vido Artukovich and Son announce start of storm drain construction. Initial work begins Monday on the Lorain road drain at the Rubio Wash, with September 5 set for the Melville drain at Del Mar. Sierra Madre drain date not yet announced.
Dr. Robert W. Owsley of Euclid Avenue Arcadia died suddenly Monday in San Francisco at age 43 while vacationing. He was an ENT specialist in Arcadia, a native of Indiana and a former Lt. Col. in the Air Force Medical Corps. He leaves widow Helen and three children along with his mother and sister. Memorials may be sent to the Heart Fund.
The council adopts an 873263 overall budget with a 1.50 tax rate per hundred, up from 1.45, to fund city operations next year. General fund rises to 1.03, library basics increase, and line items cover fire, streets, parks, recreation, civil defense, and air conditioning for the library. Revenue sources total 619143 from taxes and operation funds, with 257174.50 in operation revenue, up 49294.93 from last year.
Dr Henry David Gray, pastor of Oneonta Congregational Church in South Pasadena, is invited to become minister of Old South Congregational Church in Hartford Connecticut. The historic church, long led by the late Warren Archibald, offered the call in 1954 and Gray has not yet responded while in the East this week.
Funeral services for Ralph C. Herpolsheimer of Monterey road who died August 11 were held Saturday in the Chapel of the Gardens Mountain View Mausoleum Altadena with Rev. Oscar J. Nourse officiating. He was a native of Grand Rapids Michigan and had lived in San Marino over 20 years. He leaves his wife Jean a son Donald R of Alhambra and two grandchildren.
San Marino resident and athlete Jimmy Doan narrowly escaped death after an auto crash on the freeway near York boulevard. Doan and a companion were thrown from the vehicle and suffered only minor bruises and abrasions. He had been returning from a wedding party in Beverly Hills.
Burglars ransacked the W. E. Collin residence on Wembly road last week and took three fifths of liquor. Most rooms were entered through the rear patio door, but little else was disturbed. A hangover notion appears in the report.
Twelve San Marino residents are among about 300 newly accepted students entering Occidental College this fall. Names include Diane Collins Paul Curley Wayne Dryden Jean Frederick Ducommun Diane Franks Sylvia Gibson Howard Hall Joanne Magnolia Robert O Connor Ingrid Siebenhaar D Arcy Skinner and Bruce Soderberg with parent addresses listed.
Walter R. Allen of Arcadia admitted passing two no account checks at the Shopping Bag Market in San Marino. He will be prosecuted in Arcadia for similar offenses after arraignment on Monday. Allen expressed a desire to make restitution and was arrested by Arcadia police.
Fourteen year old Ann McReynolds of Los Robles Avenue finished second in the Junior National 100 Meter Backstroke at Philadelphia on August 11. She broke the national record in the heats with 1 18.5, then matched the mark in finals but lost to Mary Ann Marchino. Ann also advanced in senior events, with top nine finishes. She trains with the Pasadena Athletic Club under Bud Lyndon and has set multiple SPA and AAU marks in 1954.
