The county assessor reports San Marino's total assessed valuation at $28,998,660 for 1949 50, up over seven percent from last year and aided by a $1.632 million gain in real estate improvements. Personal property increases about $500,000, with utilities up $60,380, while real estate values show a small uptick and unsecured property is excluded.
Nine contractors submitted bids for street regrading and resurfacing of Granada road north of Huntington drive. Bids ranged from 5145.50 to 6834.00 with nine firms listed. All bids were referred to City Engineer H A Barnett for checking and final recommendations to the Council at the next meeting.
Rodney Wilkerson, six, polio victim and son of Dr. Bruce Wilkerson, will leave County Hospital after a marked improvement. He will return to 1009 North Granada in Alhambra with recovery underway following his Friday illness and brief hospital treatment.

The Friday Morning Coffee Club heard Pacific Electric spokesmen argue buses better than rails due to lower losses and greater city suitability. They cited 85 cities using buses, claimed faster seating and comfort, and noted rail costs higher than bus costs. A Huntington School meeting will invite further resident input.
San Marino Rotary Club gains use of Lacy Park for an annual outdoor program on Sunday September 25 starting at 2 30 p m. Members and families will attend the event keeping to the park’s rules and schedule.
Walter W. Grether 78 of 1417 St Albans road died at his home last Thursday. Services were held Saturday at the Church of the Recessional Forest Lawn Memorial Park. He was president of Grether and Grether Inc Los Angeles wholesale dry goods distributors until ill health in March. A San Marino resident for 25 years he was born in South Bend Ind and lived in California 46 years. Survived by widow Mahala two daughters Myra Dell Collins and Bernice Simon both of Alhambra three grandchildren Dr Mary Ellen Collins Joann Littlejohn Michael Grether Collins two great grandchildren Joanna and Robert Littlejohn and brother Ernest Frederick Grether Glendale.
Harbin M. Rousselot applied to the City Council for a variance to erect a home on Lot 13 Winthrop road where frontage is slightly over 23 feet. Public hearing scheduled for September 14 at 8 o'clock.
County Sanitation Engineer A. M. Rawn proposes raising the San Marino Sanitation District tax to 0.1395 from 0.1382. The Board of Supervisors will ratify the proposal this year.
Harry M. Folsom of 2478 Adair has been discharged after several days of examination and treatment at St Luke's Hospital.
City officials and recreation and school board members meet over possible youth activities at the Del Mar Avenue site after the hardball plan sparked neighborhood concern. The latest word says any program must be nonhazardous and could include tennis or softball with a future decision pending a further meeting.
Voters are reminded only 29 days remain to register for the state election on November 8. A new provision moves the final registration day to 54 days before the election, pushing it to September 15 for those who have moved, will be 21 by election day, or have recently naturalized.
Voters are reminded that August 18 is the final day to register to vote in San Marino for the October 11 bond election. The notice lists deputy registrar names and addresses for registration assistance.
Voter registration deadlines apply to those who did not vote in 1948 and to newcomers who will have resided in California for a year and in the county for 90 days by election day. Eligible San Marinans may register at City Hall or through deputies Mrs. Edythe Sears, Mrs. Rose Kronmiller, Mrs. Aline Kollman, and George P. Thatcher at listed addresses.
A brush fire yesterday afternoon burned the house at 1028 Garfield near Lewis S. Ryan. Fire departments from San Marino and South Pasadena responded, bringing the blaze under control as the property lies partly in San Marino and partly in South Pasadena.
Preliminary figures show San Marino may keep the present tax rate at 1.03 per $100 of assessed value, with the general fund at 0.86 and bonds at 0.17. Mayor Clark E. Bell says budgeting for police, parks, and library needs remains tight as population grows and valuation rises. The council has until August 30 to finalize the rate and trim spending to match last year’s level.
J Allen Gulick 52 dies August 11 at his Monterey Road home from a heart ailment. He owned Gulick Mortuary East Los Angeles and served as past master of Garden Lodge and member of Rotary Breakfast Club Forum and several Eastern Star Masonry bodies. Survived by widow Lillian and two sons Jay and Lynn. father Dudley Gulick. stepmother. uncle Carl Eyereck. Burial at Rose Hills Whittier.
Huntington School auditorium hosts Stone Summer Circus Friday at 7 p.m. featuring elephants Bozo and Dumbell the giraffe along with clowns, bears, lions and monkeys. Organizers credit Huntington playgrounds and Carver Valentine for the program’s success with students like Barbara Skaer and Patty Hallinen leading activities.
