Nicole Hummel Claims Two National Tennis Titles
Nicole Hummel daughter of William and Roselie Hummel of Lorain Road won her second national title of the summer at the US Tennis Association Girls 16 Nationals in Charleston West Virginia. The 15 year old defeated Jill Brenner of Florida in both finals posting straight set wins and allowing only three games in each match. Her strong summer performance could lift her national ranking in the Girls 16 and under division from No. 4 toward No. 2 as she prepares to play for San Marino High School this fall after helping the CIF champions as a freshman.

Heslin Becomes Test Pilot for McDonnell Douglas
John Heslin, 49, former San Marino insurance agent and Air Force Reserve officer, left his business to join McDonnell Douglas as a test pilot. He will pilot shakedown flights and train airline crews in flying MD-80 aircraft, after completing MD-80 flight training and FAA rating work. Heslin has logged 9,000 flight hours, served in Vietnam, and leads Norton AFB’s 445th Military Airlift Wing as vice commander.

Mayor Urges Realtors to Stop Annexation Rumors
San Marino Mayor Paul Crowle told the City Council last week that several realtors in nearby communities should cease spreading rumors that San Marino plans to annex areas of Los Angeles County. He released a letter stating the city has no near term annexation plans and has formed a Strategic Planning Committee to study long term options, with no serious consideration of annexations at this time. He blamed a few overzealous realtors for the misinformation and noted many inquiries to City Hall.

The San Marino Board of Education unanimously authorized district staff to begin preliminary preparations for a June bond election while stressing no commitment to participate. Members urged public hearings and on-site inspections to inform the community, as President Destino noted many factors must be considered. Dr. Thompson reported 1988-89 lottery revenues totaled 116,970 for the district with 43.18 ADA per quarter, projecting about 1 per ADA for 1989-90.
