City Manager C E Chick Martin presents the proposed 1956 57 budget to the City Council with a balanced plan totaling 815502 69 dollars. The proposal includes new fire truck street sweeper brush chipper and tractor plus maintenance funds and full year sales tax revenue.
A lighthearted column notes pregame routines with batters and pitchers while joking about umpires warming up their eyes. It also offers quips on perspective, profit, vacations, and consistency in honesty and prejudices.
Mrs. Floyd Shofner, a native of Kentucky who had lived in San Marino for 23 years, died this week in Virginia. Funeral services are set at Lamb Funeral Home in Pisadera at 10 a.m. tomorrow with burial in Rose Hills. She was active in equestrian circles and connected with the American Revolution era groups in the Southland.
Glenn McClung, former San Marino police chief now serving in Tehran, spoke to Kiwanians about Iran’s police force. He noted pay around 20 dollars a month and 15 000 nationwide officers with many illiterate. The couple stay with Harold Rice and plan to return to Iran soon.
The San Marino Recreation Department reports about 11 000 participants in July with 4500 grade and high school students using playgrounds and 6500 children and adults at the community pool. About 1000 children completed Red Cross Water Safety lessons. Byron Cook, temporary recreation director, announced a color film break in August and a September open tennis tournament with three local teams in the Los Angeles County Baseball Tournament.
Leo Hepp of Roanoke Road is recovering at Huntington Memorial Hospital after a heart attack early this week. Hepp is a well known local insurance broker. Friends are asked to send cards since visitors are not allowed.
City Council last week authorized drafting a compulsory anti rabies vaccination for dogs and will consider adoption at the September meeting. Similar ordinances are already or being adopted in nearby cities including South Pasadena Pasadena Alhambra and Arcadia. City Attorney Charles R. Martin will prepare the ordinance.
Funeral services were held for Albert Isaiah Wilson of Lorain road who died August 12 at his home. Dr. William C. Godden and the San Gabriel Masonic Board officiated at Little Stone Church of Turner Stevens and Turner in Alhambra. Interment was in Clinton Illinois, birthplace of Wilson. He had lived in San Marino for four years and is survived by his father Albert H. Wilson a sister Mrs Donald E McGuffin and a brother Kenneth D Wilson.
George H. Kronmiller of San Gabriel boulevard will sail on the USS United States to the UK to serve as Assistant Naval Attache at the US Embassy in London for two years. He is a US Naval Academy graduate and Caltech postgrad, recently advising the Secretary of Navy for Air. He will travel with his wife and two children.
SMHS reports on the San Marino Art Students summer trip led by June graduate Susan Snodgrass. The 76 day tour includes France Belgium Holland Germany Switzerland Italy and a beloved stop in San Marino where hosts entertained the group. The trip ends with sailing from Le Havre August 21 aboard the SS Orcades and arrival in Long Beach September 6.
Carver's Blue Darts beat Huntington's Hustlers 7 to 5 as Billy Asper earned the win with 10 strikeouts and four runs in the third inning. In the nightcap Don Carver pitched a no hit no run gem with 10 strikeouts to blank the Sluggers 9–0. Grant Meredith and Roger Hart drove in the decisive runs as Carver's pushed ahead in the fifth to seal the championship.
San Marino Alhambra South Pasadena Pasadena and part of Los Angeles members of Sanitation District No. 16 vote unanimously to adopt an additional two cent tax for the acquisition of dump sites.
San Marino City Council unanimously denied a variance to allow SS Felicitas and Perpetua Catholic Church to use a residential lot for parking and recreation. The church will appeal to state courts, with attorney C M Castruccio stating plans to proceed.
Superintendent Walter Dingus announces the final two hires for the San Marino teaching roster. Leo Birdwell, BA in education from Kansas City University, will teach fifth grade at Carver. Nelda Sharrock, BA, will teach freshmen, her first year in teaching.
Registration for San Marino High School opens August 20 in the administration offices with hours 8 to 12 and 1 to 4 through August 31. Early registrants gain better access to preferred classes and must bring last year’s report cards. Transcripts for new students are provided by the school.
San Marino reports a total value for the tax rate of 35,773,460 up from 35,110,700 a gain of 663,760 led by improvements and public utilities rising to 1,294,500. The tabulation shows land and personal property values, exemptions, and unsecured personal property figures with the overall net value and increases over the prior year. City Clerk E. R. Kerr announced the figures on Wednesday.
