The crusade opens today August 15 at the Los Angeles Coliseum.
The Public Library will close from Monday August 19 through Thursday August 22 for painting. Regular service resumes Friday August 23 and Saturday August 24. The library will arrange book loans so no books fall due during the closure.
Registration for the 98th Annual Swim Meet at San Marino Pool is underway. The event, co sponsored by the San Marino Kiwanis Club and Recreation Department, runs August 21 preliminaries and August 22 finals with trophies, certificates, and entry fees of 25 cents per event. Deadline is Monday August 19 at 9 p.m. Post entries are not allowed.
More than 300 families favor Embree Bus of Pasadena to transport children this fall. The district lists 308 requesting bus service and 1043 not using it. High School 142 no 62 yes, Huntington 360 no 68 yes, Carver 213 no 82 yes, Valentine 190 no 75 yes, Stoneman 138 no 21 yes.
The San Marino Recreation Department presents The Haunted House puppet show tonight at 7 30 p m in the Marine Public Library Auditorium. Tom Flynn returns with a new clown puppet and an elephant created by Allison Birch as the clown detective unravels mysteries with puppets including Serena Pecoraro Bob Elftman Jim Luscombe Penny Karr and Vanessa Allen. No admission charge and one performance only with various acts announced.
Ted Colwell, a high school senior, arrived in New York City Sunday night after two years touring with MRA. He informed his parents of his safe return and discussed his role in Space is so Start, the musical fantasy about the space age. The cast traveled from Berlin and Bonn and were welcomed by Chancellor Adenauer. A reception for the 100 member cast from 17 nations included a telegram from Mayor Yorty and Supervisor Dorn inviting the play to Los Angeles.
Durward Howes III of Oak Grove Avenue was elected president of the Retail Jewelers of America at the Waldorf Astoria in New York. He leads B D Howes and Son of Pasadena Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, and is a former national director and vice president of RJA.
Sept 27 marks the 17th anniversary of the Constitution celebration hosted by San Marino service and professional groups. A program at San Marino High School gym starts at 8 pm with Joseph E. Burger delivering the address. Participating groups include the Exchange Kiwanis Lions Rotary Masonic Lodge American Legion DAR and Chamber of Commerce.
San Marino planning commission approved two subdivisions on Granada and Oak Knoll avenues creating seven new lots on Granada and one on Oak Knoll. Applicants Mrs Ella Bean Murray and Mrs Florence Jing, both of Oak Knoll, led the effort. Estimated land value around $200,000 with potential home value adding about $200,000, totaling over $400,000 for the two subdivisions.
Mrs. William C. Fostvedt of Mirasol was bitten when a stray cat attacked during a dog fight. Police seek the attacking cat described as dark gray striped on light gray. One suspected cat is in a cooler for rabies testing while a positive ID remains uncertain. Citizens with information should contact the police.
San Marino photographers are invited to enter a Salon Photography Competition in September at the Marino Public Library auditorium gallery. Up to three prints per category. jury decides acceptances. Honorary prizes awarded for black and white and color. Bring prints September 3 2 to 6 p.m. or drop at Mc Donald's Camera Shop 2126 Huntington Drive. Submit on 16 by 20 inch mounts ready to hang. Residents and businessmen eligible.
Chuck Benedict of the Los Angeles Rams public relations department will speak at the San Marino Exchange Club meeting on Thursday August 15. The 6:45 p.m. session at Marino House on Mission Street will include Benedict, a Rams broadcaster and TV writer-producer, discussing the 1963 comeback and his national magazine story on football scouting.
San Marino Rotary Club hosts Art Rees and Marv Carlson as speakers. Rees owns McDonald Camera Shop on the drive and Carlson operates studios on Mission Street providing Rotarians a look into the world of pictures.
Ray Eberhardt of the San Marino Park Department was injured when a power mower badly cut the big toe on his right foot. He was taken to San Gabriel Community Hospital by Dolphins Ambulance. He serves as president of the San Marino City Employees Association.
Local volunteers offer Barry Goldwater rally tickets through Dudley Field at 1740 St. Albans Road. The Los Angeles County Republican Volunteer Organizations sponsor the event, urging supporters to obtain passes.
Police warn of a purse and cash register thief in the area described as a mid 30s pair of Black men about 5'7\" tall. They pose as maintenance workers to scope buildings and may drive a black Cadillac. Businesses urged caution and to contact Atlantic 2 2131 or City Hall Atlantic 2 1155 for license checks.
