Chief Glenn McClung asks ten local parents to enforce state motor laws and city ordinances to prevent accidents. A neighboring town youth died in a scooter car collision, and noisy mufflers, lack of insurance, and unsafe vehicles prompt police to cite youths and notify parents.
A San Simeon Tribune letter from Oceano California dated July 5 1946 describes a weeklong seaside camping caravan at the dunes near Pismo Beach. The writer praises sand piles Mt Claire and Mt Tom in a Sierra like landscape and reports great fishing from the lagoon and beach. The note also mentions local fireworks taxes and plans to travel toward Monterey along the California coast with a caravan of 14 relatives and parents.
San Marino branch manager at Security First National Bank Cunningham is on annual vacation with his family at Catalina Island. He has been away since early August due to illness. assistant manager J L C T is handling duties in his absence. Cunningham plans to return next Monday.
Governor Earl Warren designated August 15 1946 as Newspaper Centennial Day to honor the first English language newspaper Californian published in Monterey in 1846 and to celebrate freedom of the press and democratic ideals. The proclamation notes the roles of Robert Semple and Walter Colton and calls for continued truth telling and anti corruption in journalism.
Jean Wells Campbell, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. J. Alvin Campbell, died from injuries in a head on collision near Carlisle Pennsylvania. She had been vacationing in Virginia with Dorothy McAdam of Palmdale. Campbell passed away at Carlisle General Hospital. her family noted her war work with Caltech and California ties.
Local youngsters from Bellwood road presented There Ain’t No Ghosts, But There is a Cupid, using self made puppets costumes and stage. Bruce Moline 10 Bob Ingram 12 Joanne Magnolia 9 Lee Magnolia 13 acted in the show before a full house with Gretchen and Peter Ostrander running the soft drink concession. They plan a follow up titled The Land of the Lost based on the radio program.
The Rotary Club at noon Thursday in Pierre's will hear George S. Ferreira, regional director of cargo sales for American Airlines, discuss What Air Freight Means to California. Presentation arranged by John P. Hoffman the program chairman.
Huntington Library marks the Californian centennial with the 1846 first issue and early numbers on display. Highlights include editor statements by Walter Colton and Robert Semple, the Papal proclamations, battles, and notes from Monterey and San Francisco, with the display running until August 31.
A statewide centennial radio program honors California journalism with Governor Warren and editors, August 15 at 8 p.m. from Monterey. The 1846 Monterey Californian is recreated on a hand press. J R Knowland chairs. Don Lee network stations air 8 to 8:30 p.m. including KDON KFRC KHJ KXOA KFRE and KGB.
San Marino Kiwanis Club will show official Army Air Forces pictures of European air raids and Romanian oil-field bombing during World War II. The privately screened film is not for public release and will be shown at the Tuesday noon meeting at Woody and Eddy's on San Gabriel Boulevard and Huntington.
Weekend reports note an infantile paralysis case in San Marino as part of 18 polio cases in the Alhambra health district. Dr. F Kenneth Gates cites 126 polio victims in Los Angeles County General Hospital, urging precautions and prompt medical attention for feverish children and adults.
Public readings for Theater Americana fall play open next Monday at 7 30 PM in Farnsworth Park Altadena. Dorothy Winthrop's Love Honor and Away directed by Jane Cassidy Ray will be produced October 3 4 and 5.
The Woman's Auxiliary of St Edmund's Episcopal Church will hold a cooked foods sale at 11 a.m. tomorrow at the San Marino Market on Huntington drive near Chelsea. Proceeds fund furniture for the new parish house.
The San Marino Community Church schedules its summer picnic at Lacy Park on Saturday August 24 from 4 to 7 30 p m. Children and adults will have games with prizes and a 6 p m picnic supper. Dr Raymond Beebe and Maynard Givens lead the planning inviting friends and members to attend. Use St Albans road entrance to the park.
Mrs. Jackson W. Chance of 1245 San Marino Avenue withdrew this week from the Pasadena City Planning Commission nomination list. She cited non qualification and residence in San Marino, explaining her decision in a letter to Robert E. Dawson, chairman of the Board of City Directors.
Three bond proposals defeated in a recent special election will be resubmitted on November 5 general election. Courthouse project 19 million, jail 5 million, juvenile hall 2 million. Board of Supervisors approved resubmission amid protests by the People’s Lobby of California.
San Marino artists are invited to exhibit at Pasadena's Second Annual Art Fair on September 20 and 21 at Pasadena City Hall plaza. The event, free to attend and exhibit, aims to showcase visual arts from the region with space allocated on a first come basis. Applications are available from the Pasadena Artists Associates on East Colorado Boulevard.
