City Council Sets 1930 31 Tax Budget and Levy

The midsummer council session chaired by Mayor Richard H. Lacy approved the property valuations for two districts totaling 14 798 130 up from last year. A general fund budget of 144 733 includes 32 700 for departments 13 318 for park maintenance and 5 450 for park bonds with additional bond interest. Auditors Lybrand Ross Montgomery and the finance committee reviewed figures while plans for a Wilson avenue bridge and a 150 000 Alhambra health center were presented and invited for public inspection.

Five Injured In Collision At P E Crossing

A Pacific Electric car struck a truck and trailer at Garfield and Huntington drive injuring five people. James Holland of Los Angeles drove the truck and witnesses say he thought the interurban would stop. Victims include Harry K. Kellett and others treated at Pasadena Emergency Hospital.

San Marino Building Permits Near 1.5 Million

Building records kept by inspector George Cronshey show six months totals reaching 1,390,831.84 and nearly 1.500 million with the first two weeks of August. Major permits include W. O. Tears to build a two story nine room house at 645 Canterbury Road for 18,000 and others for 10,000 12,000 and 16,000 dollar projects.

Arcadian Family Returns From Alaska Journey

Mr and Mrs Charles W Stewart and daughter Virginia of Arcadia have completed a two and a half month Alaska tour. They flew around Mt McKinley and traveled within the Arctic Circle where Stewart represented the Adventurers of the World and planted the group flag. A full report with pictures will be given at the next Adventurers meeting.

Mrs Florence Lowe Barnes wins the first Tom Thumb air derby from Long Beach to Santa Paula and return in 1 hour 59 seconds ahead of Gladys ODonnell. ODonnell fainted before takeoff. Melba Gorby Clema Granger and Gertrude Meyer vie for minor prizes in a foggy scene. The National Air Derby spans from Long Beach to Chicago.

Covered Wagon Returns Home From Yosemite

Major Maurice Veranda and his two sisters Frances and Elsie return from a summer trip to Yosemite with cadets. He served with the Officers Reserve Corps and was assigned to the Presidio for two weeks with the 517th Artillery, then visited Fort McArthur with the 977th Anti Aircraft Artillery. The Academy opens its new year on September 15 with prospects for strong attendance.

The San Marino School Board meets Monday to finalize the next year's program. Classes begin Monday September 15 at Henry Huntington and George S. Stone man schools. Grounds at Stone man are being prepared to present a lovely, useful appearance.

Tennis Tourney to Meet Sunday

The Alhambra district tournament including San Marino will be played next Saturday and Sunday at the Alhambra Athletic Club courts and the City Park courts. Finals are scheduled for the following weekend at the same times, with junior tournaments on Monday afternoon August 18 and continuing through the week.
