Mayor Clark Bell resigns as council grapples with inflation and rising costs. City Clerk Kerr estimates the tax rate will rise, with tentative figures aiming to minimize the increase. Salaries are expected to climb about seven and a half percent, mirroring regional trends.
The City Council passed a tribute resolution honoring Clark E. Bell for years of service as Councilman since 1942 and Mayor since 1947. It notes ill health necessitating his resignation and expresses appreciation and best wishes for recovery and happiness.
The Business and Professional Association hosts Value Days with four shopping centers uniting for a four day event Thursday to Saturday. A BPA committee promotes the celebration in this issue. Mayor Clark E. Bell resigns due to illness after ten years in city leadership. The resignation, effective immediately, follows a health check and hospital observation. Bell served San Marino as councilman and mayor since 1947 and will not seek action on a replacement until the September meeting.
The council approved the maximum general fund tax rate of 1.00, up from 0.93 last year. The library levy rose from 0.18 to 0.22 due to non recurring capital needs, lifting the total tax rate from 1.35 to 1.46.

Mrs Margaret Schirm MacNab 42 of 1624 West Drive died at home Tuesday after a brief illness. Rosary at 7:30 in Little Stone Chapel Turner Stevens Turner Alhambra. Survived by three children Alexander Alan 13 Ann 12 Patricia 10, mother Mrs Louis Schirm Pasadena, and brothers Louis Jr Burbank Raymond J Pasadena John S San Marino.

The San Marino School Board discussed adult education and will seek resident input before proceeding. Ongoing facilities limit daytime teaching, so evening classes only are possible this fall. residents may enroll with Walter Dingus to shape the program.
Mrs Gerda Nelson of 6842 North Muscatel San Gabriel reported a purse theft while shopping Monday. The Highland Park police recovered the purse under the Arroyo Seco bridge on Figueroa avenue, with contents rifled and five dollars missing.
Sidney H Wall was chosen to lead a special school bond election committee for the September 30 vote. The Board of Education appointed him at its meeting Tuesday night and he will form subcommittees and name vice chairs. The group will meet at 8 p.m. in Huntington School cafeteria with many local residents named to the committees.
The old library's redecorating is completed with pastel green rooms and new lighting to meet state planning specs. Seven high school classrooms plus three gym rooms are prepared for use. Equipment and textbooks are arriving, with lockers possibly delayed due to a steel strike.
Rosary was held Tuesday evening at Little Stone Church of Ambra for Mrs. Oropallo. Interment followed at Calvary Cemetery. A Los Angeles native, she lived in San Marino two years and is survived by husband Anthony and three sons Anthony Jr Robert Allen and Gerald Lee all of San Marino. Her parents Ralph and Mrs Gentile of Los Angeles survive.
Services were held Tuesday afternoon in Little Church of the Flowers at Forest Lawn for Mrs. George A. Jacobs of 990 Afton Road who died August 8 in a Pasadena hospital. The Rev. Raymond Waser officiated. She was born in Coesse Indiana and lived in California 25 years. Survived by son Philip M. Jacobs and relatives in San Marino Fort Wayne Palo Alto Pasadena.
Rotary representatives of San Marino Toastmasters Club 69 form a panel for the San Marino Rotary Club meeting with Luncheon at 12 at Pierre's. Talks by Bill Young Clint Kelly and John Duling titled Shall We Continue the ECA Offense is the Best Defense and What This Country Needs. On August 21 Dr Monroe Loy named chairman for the day to entertain their ladies the Rotaryans.
Two year old Christine Fuller of 2440 Roanoke Road selected an improper bottle from a trash pile while playing and was rushed to Hunt hospital for a precautionary checkup. She recovered and returned home the same day with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. L. Fuller.
San Marino All Star team upset Rosemead 8 to 6 after trailing early. Key plays featured Jay Sheldon and Warren Fix hits, Bucky Oltmans three base hit, and a late rally in the sixth led by Butterfield and Sencer. Sencer pitched a strong seventh to seal the win.
At a council meeting the City Attorney was asked to review a long and complex lease prepared by the Pacific Electric Company and the EPA for a shelter house opposite the old San Marino station. EPA asks city to study it and make recommendations before signing. no construction moves forward until definite city advice is received after more than six months of planning.
Davis Merwin of Denver and his brother Loring, owners of Bloomington Pantagraph, met General Dwight D. Eisenhower with cousin Gov. Adlai Stevenson’s family watching. Merwin plans Korea assignment as Pantagraph correspondent and discussed Eisenhower’s military and national defense views.
The San Marino Foundation Inc announced purchase of a large building site on Huntington Drive east of San Gabriel Boulevard with 141 foot frontage and 170 foot depth. Final plans hinge on a conference with Grand Lodge officials of the Masons. The site will serve San Marino Lodge of the Eastern Star Job’s Daughters and DeMolay. The Foundation was represented by M Neil Thackaberry president Vido Kovacevich vice president John Henderson treasurer and Alfred Johanson secretary.
Superintendent Elmer C. Neher announced the appointment of Miss Dorothy C. Upton as remedial reading teacher for the new unified district. Miss Upton earned a B.S. from Teachers College at Columbia University and studied at Boston University and the University of Pennsylvania. Her teaching career includes Fitchburg Massachusetts Bryn Mawr Pennsylvania Rye New York and New Canaan Connecticut with seven years at Poly...
