City Council deferred fixing the 1946 47 tax rate due to late assessed valuation from the County Assessor. A anticipated county refund on liquor licenses after a court ruling will reduce the base valuation, delaying budget figures. The 1946-47 rate was 1.20 with allocations for general fund library and bonds, now subject to change.
Building permits issued by George H. Crowshey show new home construction expanding beyond additions. Charles O. Kallman will build a nine room house at 1449 Hampton road for 20000. W E Jost plans a 30000 residence at 1014 San Marino avenue.
Parker F. Hubert 16 won senior D class at the Seventeenth Annual National Model Airplane Contest in Olathe Kansas August 4 to 8. He set a new speed record of 140.60 mph surpassing last year's 134.40 mph. Hubert receives a trophy plus 75 dollars and a stop-watch, designs and builds his own planes, and will soon travel to Detroit for the Plymouth Motor Corporation’s Second International Model Plane Contest August 18 to 23, sponsored by Wegge Pelton Plymouth Motor Company of Pasadena. He is among 500 top model builders invited from a field of 700 applicants including competitors from California and seven foreign countries.
San Gabriel Valley residents form the Light Opera Association to raise 25 000 for a production at the Mission Playhouse. San Gabriel city funds 1 000 and holds funds in escrow at California Bank while a drive aims for 15 000 members and 200 donors. An open meeting is scheduled at the Mission House Civic Auditorium on August 16 at 8 p.m.
Dr. Roy Gilbert Los Angeles County Health Officer told San Marino Kiwanis Club members that Los Angeles County has changed, with larger population and new residents bringing health challenges. He noted five years without a smallpox case and low diphtheria due to health authorities and labs, speaking at the Tuesday noon meeting led by Leo H. Hepp.
Fire from a burning trash pile damaged part of the garage roof at 1715 Chelsea Road Saturday afternoon. Lloyd H Hall, who was burning papers nearby, wet down the area and had a hose when the roof caught fire. Firemen responded and extinguished the blaze. damage estimated at 300 dollars.
Smog Director Dr Louis C McCabe announced a petition to revoke the operating permit of a Los Angeles lead recovery plant and opened a countywide drive against plants violating air pollution laws. He said leniency ends for operators not reducing smoke and pollutants and noted four new inspectors will strengthen enforcement.

Huntington Library presents rare records from the Alaska Boundary Conventions of 1903 and the Hague Fisheries arbitration 1909 1910. The gift includes volumes once owned by Sir Charles Fitzpatrick and a Mitchell map facsimile 54 by 76 inches. Charles Davis 16 and two Pasadena teens were constructing a home made gun from scrap metal when a 22 cartridge discharged. Davis was grazed on the left forearm and the bullet lodged in his abdomen. he was treated at Huntington Memorial Hospital and is improving.
City officials indicate support for installing an automatic stop and go signal at the Los Robles and Mission intersection. The city engineer estimated around 2500 dollars for the project and the figures were reviewed by the street and police commissioners. Council action is anticipated once recommendations are reported.
