Fire Ruins Harwood Home in San Marino
The largest San Marino fire in recent memory destroyed the Harwood residence at 555 Huntington Drive. Interior flames and smoke resulted in $6500 in damages with living room, hall, and a bedroom ruined while dining room and another bedroom suffered smoke and water damage. Mrs. Harwood was abroad. Mr. Harwood left for Alhambra earlier. Insurance covered the dwelling, but the antiques were lost.

Women's Club Group Plans Active 1938-39 Sports Schedule
The San Marino Woman's Club Sports Guild stays busy through summer with golf riding tennis and badminton. Fourteen members head to Balboa Island for a day outing hosted by president Mrs. Clark E Bell with arrangements by Mrs. Andrew Gram and Mrs. Donald Lewis. Participants include Mesdames Gram Lewis David Shooshan Raymond Dudley Stanley Weir Dan Lindsay Hartley Lovatn and Misses Marjorie Helwig Laura Bee Suzanne Rogers. A Sports Guild dinner dance is planned for Friday August 19 at the Tropical Terrace Hotel Vista del Arroyo following an earlier badminton evening hosted by Mrs. Shooshan and a social gathering at Mrs. Dudley’s home.

San Marinans Injured In Lake Tahoe Boat Crash
Two San Marino men, L. J. Fageol and mechanic Joseph A. Lucas, were seriously injured when their 800 horsepower motorboat sank near the Lake Tahoe Yacht Club regatta after the rudder broke. The accident occurred Sunday afternoon within fifty feet of victory.

Wayne Allen Named Co Manager for Los Angeles County
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors unanimously appointed Colonel Wayne R. Allen as county administrator, while he will retain duties as county purchasing agent. A San Marino resident, Allen also commands the 160th Infantry National Guard and heads Exposition Park Armory in Los Angeles. Flower Show To Have Permanent Arroyo Home
Plans for a permanent Fannie E. Morrison Horticultural Center in the Arroyo Seco near Brookside Park Pasadena were announced. The center, funded by Mrs. Morrison, will open Monday and be ready by October 15 to host the Southern California Flower Show October 28–30. The complex includes four main halls around a courtyard, a 40 by 150 foot main building, two long 36 by 84 foot exhibit halls, and a semicircular garden promenade, with ample space for exhibits, equipment, and water access.

The San Marino City Council approved the 1938-39 tax rate of 1.13 per hundred, raised total levies to 170296.55, and announced a series of police, fire, park, and street contracts. Glenn F. McClung was named police chief with a 25 monthly salary increase, and California street improvements were awarded to Fitzgerald Engineering for 5232.36.

San Marino Post 239 of the American Legion plans the second annual Pierre Pilgrimage to Lake Arrowhead on Sunday August 14 at 8 AM. Members, guests of August Pierre at Emerald Bay, will return late Sunday. Genial Tom Norton chairs, with transport arranged for nondriving members. The 1937 jaunt was popular with speedboating aquaplaning and water sports plus color film archives to preserve. August Pierre, Emerald Bay vice commander, has long been active in post affairs.

San Marino Wins Court Case Over School Budget Adjustments
A Superior Court victory by San Marino residents against the South Pasadena High School District led to budget changes adopted by South Pasadena districts. Based on assessed valuation, elementary taxes were expected to rise about 12 cents while the high school rate fell about 9 cents, saving San Marino residents in the high school levy.
