First Woman Here Called Into Service
Patricia Bergman daughter of Elmer Bergman of 785 Winthrop Road was called into active service with the U S Marines a week ago likely the first San Marino woman in active service for Korea War. She joined the Marine Reserves a year ago and after a vacation at Laguna Beach returned to Oakland to work. She is now at Mare Island San Francisco a Private First Class. A Stanford University graduate in 1947 an electrical engineer she was with General Electric Oakland and becomes the first Oakland employee to join active service and wear a blue star. Bergman vacationed with her sister Margaret at Pasadena Playhouse.

Sixteen San Marino Boy Scouts earned a High Sierra pack trip near Sequoia Giant Forest for the year’s standout citizenship and achievements. Alternates included Lynn O’Brien Jr. and others who joined as substitutes. Fathers and San Marino Church leaders helped transport and organize the two day excursion. The group camped at Wolverton Camp and Lone Pine Meadows with bedrolls and gear carried by scouts, food and utensils on burros, before returning home.

Parole Denied for Former School Principal Spencer

Mr and Mrs Walter Larson of 2610 Lorain road reported sighting a brilliant metal disc about 15 feet wide and six feet thick hovering roughly 500 feet above ground in Highland Park district around 9 10 Tuesday morning. They claim the object hovered several seconds and shot toward Los Angeles at high speed, and say both witnessed it clearly despite later heckling.
