The South Pasadena-San Marino High District OKd its 1945-46 budget at a Wednesday meeting with a tax rate estimate of 7177 and total needs of 471,645. The rate reflects higher salaries and a 9000 setup for teachers replacing men on military leave, aiming to secure a year of employment.
Two brothers Robert P Gam St and Delbert C Gambill of Wise home at 900 Chester Avenue, both 18, were appointed as Midshipmen at the U S Merchant Marine Academy with concurrent USNR Merchant Marine Reserve. Cadets train at San Mateo then serve six to eight months at sea aboard merchant vessels before Kings Point training. Graduation licenses mates or third mates and commissions ensigns in Navy Reserve and Maritime Service.
Police report three solicitors pleaded guilty and were fined under the city ordinance forbidding mine sales. Quick thinking by local officers prevented further offenses as authorities enforce the rule banning such solicitations within the municipality.
Harry T. Curnow is confirmed as field executive in charge of the San Marino District by the Pasadena San Gabriel Valley Council of Boy Scouts. He will oversee Temple City San Marino Arcadia and Monrovia units and previously led leadership training efforts in the valley.
Harold Dryden, chairman of the San Marino Community Council, receives a National War Fund report on merchant seamen needs. The UK European area director cites three survivor cases since V E Day and 245 seamen in hospitals, noting ongoing mine dangers and aid requirements.
Dr. Edward P. Bailey the oldest living Australian explorer will address the Masons after the August 13 stated meeting. He will present an illustrated talk on the Australian Aborigines with 100 lantern slides, depicting life and customs and his journeys into remote jungle regions.
Chief of Police Glenn McClung is reported seriously ill and was rushed to St Luke Hospital in Pasadena at 4 30 p m. He is believed to have pneumonia.
A San Marino Community Church picnic at Lacy Park enjoyed a cool afternoon with punch ice cream and baskets. Marilyn McCormick organized games for children while deacon committees coordinated events. Winners in numerous age group races and sack races included Mary Jane O Connor Stephen Fryer Susan Henderson Diana Davis Janet Shaer Bob Harrington Jerry Harrington and others.
John B. Long, chairman of National Newspaper Week, names the theme Free Press Torch of World Peace for the sixth observance. He cites UNCIO World Charter ratification as proof of full news coverage’s value and recalls Potsdam as a contrast. The piece highlights press freedom, wartime reporting, and efforts to inform the public.
Elmer J. Erickson principal of the senior high school returns from military leave to resume his post in Terre Haute Indiana. James R. Carpenter resumes duties as vice principal and Russell Adams continues in the attendance office with part time teaching in cooperation with the vice principal.
Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Thursday August 9 for Mrs. Marguerite Roach who died Monday morning at her Mission Drive home. She was active in San Marino Community Church. Dr P M TuTha Baker will conduct the memorial. Survived by husband Malcolm Roach and five year old son Tony.
Clyde E. Holley of 2605 Oak Knoll Avenue is chosen to chair the building committee of the Oneonta Congregational Church. He will lead planning for a proposed new church plant in the early postwar period, with church moderator Henry J. Wheeler praising the selection as an asset to the building program. The church serves surrounding communities including San Marino Alhambra South Pasadena and San Gabriel.
Memorial services were held Wednesday for Mrs. Addie Jo Daniell of 1515 Kensington Road. She died Saturday at home. Burial was in San Gabriel Cemetery. She leaves two sons Reginald Daniell of Pittsburgh and Edward A Daniell of San Marino one daughter Lillian K Daniell and four grandsons serving in the Navy.
Recreation director William JRenison lists champions across events at Ban Marino’s annual tournament. Winners include Diane Gardner in adminton singles and caroms, Barbara Mills in checkers, Janey Munro in ping pong singles, and Virginia MudHarg in junior tennis singles among others.
The Rotary Club at noon Thursday in Pierre's will host Col. Robert K. Alcott US Army retired. He will lecture on universal military service. Alcott began in 1898 during the Spanish American War and served on the Mexican border and in World War I with the 34th Division. He has a 30 year career and now resides in San Marino.
The San Marino Garden Club requests cut flowers from nearby gardens for bouquets to brighten bedside tables at Pasadena Regional Hospital. Call Mrs. R. E. Post at Sycamore 39-3943 before 5 p m or Mrs. R. H. Crowshey at Atlantic 2-5985 after 5 p m on Thursday August 9. calls must be received before 8:30 a m on Friday August 10.
Captain Alfred E. Benton of the Army Air Forces, son of Mr and Mrs Roy F Benton of 17090 Euclid Avenue, arrived on leave after completing 192 European missions. He is a fighter bomber pilot with Air Medal, Oak Leaf Clusters, Unit Citation, Bronze Star, and Presidential commendations. He participated in six major battles and will report to Santa Ana after a stay in San Marino ending August 25.
At a City Council meeting led by Mayor Tibbetts the San Marino Congregation Church variance request was continued to September 12. July building permits totalled 113047 for a new store, seven homes, and 25 additions, while seven months into 1945 show 319629 in value, far above the prior year.
The letter traces the death of Dr. Grey's nephew Jim Grey in a Japanese prison during captivity. The message notes Grey's family ties to Alfred D. Grey and James M. Grey, mentions a planned Philadelphia visit around mid August, and promises further details about the last eighteen months of Jim's life. It references wartime imprisonment and limited communication between prisoners.
Teenagers of San Marino enjoyed five weeks of gaiety at Huntington tennis courts on five nights from seven to nine. Refreshments of soft drinks continued throughout. Tigers Den sign appeared last week on the tennis courts and credit is given to Jack Waltz.
Comdr. Paul E. Summers USN at 31 2515 Lorain Road received the Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism while commanding a submarine patrol. He and his family at the stated address were cited as Summers attacked heavily escorted enemy shipping, sank or damaged vessels, and returned safely to port per the citation.
The Congregational Church sponsors a free two week Vacation Church School from Aug 6 to 17 at 2192 Sherwood road in the backyard of the Powell residence. Children aged 4 to 12 enjoy games handcraft nature study painting singing and Bible worship under supervision of a large staff led by Miss Thesdosia Robinson. Enrollment expected to reach 50 with new children welcome each morning. A special Friday service from 11 to 12 will be arranged for parents to attend.
