San Marino approves Nov 4 vote on police fire and paramedics tax

City Council sets November 4 as election date to renew a four year police and fire tax totaling up to 5.59 million dollars for 1987-1991 plus a 30 dollar per parcel paramedics levy rising to 36 by 1990. Council approves ordinance 4-0, with Mayor Simmons noting two thirds approval required and a fallback March special election if defeated.

Thread That Runs So True staged by PT Affiliates summer class

The PT Affiliates summer school theater program presented The Thread That Runs So True on July 30 directed by Jim Korkis. Set in a 1925 rural schoolhouse the play featured Matt Morris as Jesse Stuart with a large cast including Allison Fletcher Chad Houck Lora Tindall Athena Duff and many others. A morning student performance and a full evening audience of parents and friends highlighted the event. The production adapts a Jesse Stuart book and showcases student effort and group acting.

Creative Thinking Urged by NASA Workshop Leader

Rotary Luncheon Speaker Warns Drug Abuse Threat

Sherman Block, Los Angeles County Sheriff, told the Rotary Club of San Marino that increasing drug abuse is the single greatest threat to the nation. He urged national commitment to eradicate drugs, education starting in fourth grade, tougher action on drug-supplying countries, and questioned recent Bolivia involvement. He warned terrorism remains a danger while focusing on domestic violence and demand reduction as key.

Block Announces National Night Out for Aug 12

Sheriff Block announces the National Night Out sponsored by National Association of Town Watch Inc. Neighbors nationwide will hold barbecues candlelight walks and activities to show unity against crime. Lights will be turned on from 8 to 9 pm August 12 to signal neighborhood watch. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department urges daylight headlight drives and participation by neighborhood groups as part of a countywide program involving about 180,000 citizens. San Marino Police also expresses interest in supporting a Neighborhood Watch.
