Parker Hubert Jr., son of local residents, won first in Open Class Beauty and second in Junior Speed at the Control Line Gas Model meet in Tucson Arizona. He led 40 Southern California youths on a Army Air Force sponsored trip, earning two bronze trophies and broadcasting coverage via CBS. He designs and builds his own speed planes, holds a national speed record, and leads the Flying Tigers of South Pasadena.
South Pasadena-San Marino High School district trustees agreed to set maximum annual teacher pay at 4550 plus a 100 cost of living bonus for the coming year. The move aligns salaries with neighboring districts after voters blocked a tax-rate increase and forced budget reductions.
A turtle was collected by police at the W. H. Stringman residence 1505 lon after refusing to reveal its identity. It was delivered to the San humane society without ceremony.
Two city mailmen were bitten this week by dogs allowed to roam in hot weather. Police warn that repeat incidents could lead to authorities impounding roaming animals and depriving owners of mail delivery. Eight dog bites were reported in the past month.
Mayor Clark E. Bell Police Chief Glenn McClung and Tribune editor H. H. McCormick attended a courthouse dedication in Pasadena Monday night at the invitation of the Pasadena Board of City Directors. Raymond W. Carlson of Los Angeles was found guilty by a San Marino jury in a drunken driving case. He planned to appeal the $250 fine, claiming mystigmus affected his eyes. Witnesses included a female juror and several officers who testified to alcohol in the system and a weaving car.
San Marino board approved the annual budget of 440700 in a meeting with no public attendance. Remley and Davis of Whittier won the painting and decorating bid at 868.75, with plans for new auditorium drapes. October 13 was set as a teachers’ sectional assembly holiday at Sierra Madre.
Trustees rejected all bids for the Huntington School project after bids far exceeded estimates. The district planned a 450000 bond plus 70000 reserve and 25000 balance to fund the new elementary school and Huntington additions. Lowest bids ranged from 385000 to 444720 with several firms named. bids may now be on a partial scope basis and bids open September 16 at 8 PM.
Police reports show 137 unlocked houses found in the past month. The task of checking homes for absences consumed 68 percent of taxpayer funded police hours, with two officers required for each case of an unlatched home. The checks serve as a protective service to guard residents during vacations.
About 143 entries took part in the 12th annual Flight of the Snow Birds at Newport Balboa Harbor. San Marinans Toby Kirk placed seventh and Bill Fundenberg twelfth, with a long list of local skippers including Philip Brabyn Doug Smiley Peter Dobbs Mary Fenton Morris Kirk Bill Lattin Ben Wright Winston Fuller Molly Richard Mott Marilyn Kiech and Martha Louise Fundenberg. Street Superintendent Paul Barton says the parking lot east of City Hall will be ready by August despite worker shortages and ongoing street work. He cites limited manpower and material delivery delays but promises no further hold ups and completion within weeks.
The four acre estate known as Hollyhouse on Eas Longden, San Gabriel, formerly owned by Dr. and Mrs. Loren Hollingsworth, is sold to Mr. and Mrs. Lynn C. Cameron of Huntington Park for $100,000. The Cameron home in Huntington Park was exchanged, now owned by Mr. and Mrs. R. O. Wade. Floyd Glass of Shepard and Morgan represented all parties.
Building inspector George H Crowy issued permits this week for new residences at 1995 Lombardy Road Pasadena by R W Ogle a one story home and at 1637 Shenandoah Windsor Road by B L Hoag a two story residence. Also approved are Thomas L Sims at 2575 Devonport H A Armstrong at 1505 Kensington and R W Havenstein at 2960 Sheffield for new homes.
City council seeks lower tax rate as part of the budget but an exact reduction amount remains undetermined. Officials say no definite figure can be established yet.
E. G. Ryder long time Santa Fe Railway public relations official for Coast Lines will retire August 7. He began in 1918 in freight-claim in San Francisco, later becoming city freight agent, then assistant industrial agent in 1922 with Bay City HQ, and since 1936 Los Angeles representative in charge of Coast Lines PR. Ryder, a civic figure in Alameda and other chambers, will stay in San Marino with Mrs. Ryder. The passage notes city budget planning, no salary raises last two years, and efforts to reduce expenses while meeting essential needs as the county assessor provides exact valuation.
Building figures climbed to 405908.03 this year, up from 203820.25 last year, study by George H. Crowshey shows. The sum funds 13 new houses two stores and 35 additions. The 1947 total to date reaches 1937305.56 versus 1946 July end total of 2218510.34.
The San Marino Community Church expects the first unit to be ready for occupancy by the first Sunday in September as building chair Dr. Douglas Wright Jr. reports. Interior painting nears finish with Edith Hines guiding color harmony. A temporary worship space with 50 percent more seats than the current chapel will serve during sanctuary construction, while a large parking lot and sidewalk improvements are planned south of the new structure.
