July shows a rise in building activity with a total value around 262 thousand dollars for the month, higher than earlier records. Projects listed include homes in Pasadena and Los Angeles districts, with several contractors and architects named for new construction and renovations across multiple streets.
Colonel Edward P Bailey and John Steven McGroarty will address a noon luncheon of the Women International Peace Crusade at the Normandie Hotel in Los Angeles on Wednesday August 12. The group, led by American and British women, seeks universal peace by removing warfare’s causes and promoting brotherhood.
Val Woodbury and Jerry Voorhis debated at a local junior high on August 12 amid campaign themes. The discussion touched on Roosevelt era reforms and party platforms as candidates framed their positions before the Belvedere event and upcoming Pomona meeting. James Ogg, Democrat for Congress, noted the district stakes.
Ten thousand spectators watched a Kids Roaster contest along Fair Oaks Avenue as 100 boys and girls built and rode coasters from Fair Oaks and Columbia to Monterey. John Krom and Jack Barry won heavy and light classes. Weir Hodgman won unsponsored class. Following the event, a roller skating contest on El Centro street featured dozens of young athletes.
At Huntington School last Friday morning 170 children and 50 parents attended the final program of the San Marino Summer Playground. The event featured a play Every Man A King directed by Miss Virginia Moore and included musical numbers and dances. Four tennis winners were announced Thayer Bliss Frances Thurman Kenneth Wilson and Nancy Alpine. Fifteen novelty races were held with place winners listed for each event including horse and rider wheelbarrow lemon jump rope and three legged races.
Eleven Troop 3 scouts depart for a ten day trip to Yosemite Valley led by Scoutmaster Charles Herr and his wife assisted by Steve Seaton. They base at Tuolumne Meadows after entering via Tioga Pass and plan to return midweek through Merced and Fresno. Scouts named include Porter, Beckmann, Lorenz, Rufer, Sherman, Norton, Ringstrom, Tibbetts, Ensign, Cherniss, and Schirm.
Forty new homes have been completed furnished and occupied in the past two months per records by Assistant City Building Inspector George Cronshey Jr. Homes range from French Colonial to Monterey and Spanish styles. New residents include the D G De Pledges of Pasadena moving into 1300 Winston Ave and a French Colonial at 1681 Lorain Road.
San Marino reports nearly complete voter registration with 3043 registered, among the highest Republican majorities in the region. The 12th Congressional District shows 143,651 voters with Democrats leading 78,730 to 57,959 Republicans, while the 11th District around Pasadena has 167,775 voters with Democrats now ahead for the first time in history.
Funeral service for A. J. Mitchell is planned at Turmer Stevens and Berry chapel at 1000 Fremont Avenue South Pasadena. Interment will follow at San Gabriel Cemetery and the survivor list includes a daughter Catherine Mitchell and a son Chester Mitchell.
William Hertrich recounts his European lecture tour on rock garden plants for the Alpine Conference under the Royal Horticultural Society in London. He notes exchanges with botanical gardens, visits to Kew Wisley New York Bronx Park and Brooklyn, and stops at Dahlem and Nymphenburg with prominent herbariums and staff.
San Marino Studio Theatre celebrates two years welcomes support for next season. First show planned for October with aim to expand facilities and improve plays. Membership drive targets 400 patrons with sustaining 7 50 dollars per person and patron 5 dollars per person, includes six show season book and one guest card. Loyce Anderson of Alhambra suffered a severe cut over the right eye and was taken to Alhambra Health Center after a crash at Huntington Drive and San Gabriel Boulevard. She was a passenger in a car driven by R E Gick of Alhambra. the collision involved Glenn W. Kelley of Monrovia. Two cars were badly damaged but Anderson was the only injuries reported. A second minor collision occurred later on Huntington Drive near West Drive involving W H McGinnis of Uplands and William Thomas Watson of Los Angeles.
Fire Chief C. C. Copley returned to San Marino to resume duties after a July 17 start on a tour through San Francisco Portland Seattle Spokane Minneapolis Chicago Toronto andDetroit with Niagara Falls side trips. The group of nearly 90 attended fire drills exhibits and school sessions in multiple cities and Glacier National Park, culminating in Toronto for the Great Fireman's International Meet.
San Marino Business Association heard J H Hanson of the Federal Bureau of Investigation discuss G-Men and federal crime work. He outlined the 25 to 35 age requirement, training in Washington, fingerprint evidence, firearms, and the evolving reach of federal policing including kidnapping statutes and bank fraud cases.
The San Marino school board approved a total year budget of 79 950 for 1936 37 with planned expenditures of 81 950 including 2 000 for tuition in South Pasadena. Teachers salaries total 44 294 and plant operation 14 670. The full budget details were published in the Tribune legal notice column last week. The district plans to procure 39 976 from taxation.
