At the San Marino Civilian Defense Council meeting the city announced delivery of an ambulance and two auxiliary fire trucks. Fire Chief C C Copley reported the sled-mounted skid trucks cost 3000 dollars and mount a gas-driven pump with a Ford V-8 engine capable of 500 gallons per minute.
Cassatt D. Griffin of 2390 Lorain Road is confirmed as camouflage chairman for the Los Angeles County Defense Council. Sheriff Eugene W. Biscailuz and Harold W. Kennedy announce the appointment as the council coordinates with the U.S. government to identify and reduce plant visibility from the air, aiding engineers and architects to limit exposure. Griffin serves as acting Chief Engineer for the Los Angeles County Department of Building and Safety, succeeding Lt. Col. William Fox, previously of 2860 Lorain Road.
The San Rotary Club plans a noon meeting with George A. Baker of Bank of America as speaker on humorous aspects of human relations. Dr. G. E. Norwood serves as chairman.
The San Marino War Price and Rationing Board issued tires, cars, and two bicycles during July. Recipients of tires include Bernhard Palm Vernon L Knoll L L Bonham Temple Murphy and many others. new cars went to Wm C Gaf fers M D Schatzman Fred J Bageman and Norris V Crawshaw. Anne K Deering and Martell Wells received orders for new bicycles.
The War Price and Rationing Board at 2300 Huntington Drive begins processing bicycle applications. Since April 2 bicycle sales are frozen and only riders with work-related needs may qualify. Applicants must prove gainful employment or war welfare contribution and require a bicycle at least three times weekly.
San Marino women will meet Republican candidates for the August primary at a luncheon on Friday August 14 at Joys Inn. Open to Republican women and Democrats, the event will be hosted by Mrs C O Cornwell with Robert French of Alhambra introducing endorsed candidates for three main offices including state assemblyman Frederick Houser running for lieutenant governor.
Douglas Charles Mattocks 43 longtime advertising executive for the Los Angeles Examiner died after a prolonged illness at Sawtelle hospital. Funeral services were held August 4 at Pierce Brothers Washington Boulevard chapel with entombment at Fair Haven Mausoleum Santa Ana. He was born in Pocatello Idaho and lived in Southern California 32 years. Survived by wife Gertrude two daughters Robin Marilyn and Mary Ann and brothers William A and Edgar S Mattocks. The family formerly lived at 2863 Gainsborough Drive.
Police report two burglaries Friday night or Saturday morning. Robert F. Garner Jr. and C. F. Kiech houses were entered. At Garner none taken. at Kiech two Elgin watches and four defense booklets stolen, with entry by breaking rear doors.
Citizens are urged to contribute food and amusement items for San Marino’s searchlight unit. Mrs. Philip Gresham lists cake candy cookies fruits and doughnuts and calls for a ping pong table. The new ambulance purchased by the San Marino Woman's Club for 1000 is a Chevrolet with three stretchers siren red lights and space for four attendants and four injured.
The South Pasadena San Marino High School board announced no tax increase for next year. A budget hearing was held at the Administration building. Miss Jane I Frampton was elected to fill a vacancy on the South Pasadena San Marino Junior High School staff.
Richard Fenton a noted California oil man from San Marino was appointed by Price Administrator Leon Henderson to serve on the O P A oil advisory committee for the western United States. Dr Arthur G Coons state O P A price officer announced the move this week.
Peace time yachtsmen convert sailing skill to national defense. Horton Williams of 1846 Lorain road San Marino leads Southern California’s Coast Guard Auxiliary flotilla. Lt. Erwin C. Jones of 1855 Twin Palms recently joined active Coast Guard service. Auxiliary members are civilian volunteers with boating and navigation experience. The unit operates similarly to the regular service.
Francis B. Woodworth has been commissioned as 1st Lieutenant in the Air Corps and is stationed temporarily at Santa Ana, commuting from 1510 Bellwood Road. He left his post as director of publications for the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce on July 28 to assume Air Corps duties. Mrs Woodworth and their five year old Barbara and two year old Frances plan to follow him to his permanent station.
Dr Edwin Hubble departs 1340 Woodstock July 29 bound for Aberdeen Maryland to begin exterior ballistics work for the Army at the proving ground. A former Mount Wilson astronomer he was commissioned for his scientific approach to firing tables and trajectories.
Frank Vanderhoof of 1827 Virginia read will occupy the pulpit at San Marino Community Church this Sunday. He will deliver a sermon titled The Godly Man at 9 45 during one service.
Clifford Cummings Chickering 78 former head of the Chickering Piano Company died Tuesday morning at his Circle Drive home after 16 years in San Marino He was a Cincinnati native and retired from active leadership about 16 years ago Funeral services were held yesterday at Turner and Stevens chapel with burial at Pasadena Mausoleum Mrs Chickering had died in January 1940 leaving no immediate relatives
San Marino and nearby towns report sharply lower July construction values compared with July 1941. San Gabriel starts eight homes while South Pasadena and Monrovia show reduced totals for the month and year to date. Sierra Madre year to date permits top $103,121 with seven months completed.
