Edward L. Emett of 1591 Virginia Road and Knox Ferrand of Los Angeles were elected trustees of Claremont Men’s College. Emett, a Los Angeles insurance firm member and Occidental College and UC graduate, attended the University of Poitiers and is a World War I veteran and Southern California Symphony Association executive committee member.
A. W. McKinlay of this city is named assistant controller of the Metropolitan Water District effective January. He will succeed James M. Laney upon retirement. McKinlay has been district chief accountant since 1933 and joined the district in 1932. He and his wife live at 1725 Virginia Road, a home they began in 1941 and moved into in January 1942.
Parents of 22 Oneonta Congregational Church youths on a summer England Scotland Ireland trip, hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Morris Pendleton, heard letters from Oxford Coventry Manchester Edinburgh Belfast and London. Noted were copies of Manchester City Council proceedings and comments on a British medical center visited by Don Spivey.
San Marino residents take key roles in the Los Angeles Community Chest drive. Edward R. Valentine names Carleton B. Tibbetts as division chairman with Fred Garrison as vice chairman to lead 12,000 volunteers in 7,000 firms. Tibbetts and Garrison are local residents with ties to business groups.
Dr. G. E. Norwood, immediate past president, will wield the gavel at the San Marino Rotary Club meeting at Pierres on Huntington Drive in Clar ence Fetterman’s absence. Ten visiting Rotarians from East Los Angeles expected as guests. Funds pledged last year to Huntington Memorial Hospital Tumor Clinic will be presented to clinic representatives during the meeting.
Dixon Wecter, UCLA English professor and Huntington Library figure, writes The Age of the Great Depression for Macmillan. The History of American Life volume traces 1929 to 1941 and uses polls, government reports, and library research to show effects on daily life.
City officials urge residents to burn yard debris in their own backyards as county smog rules halt at Peck road dump. Trash burning ended last Saturday when county renewals stopped. City will store combustibles briefly while awaiting county action, with ongoing curbside noncombustibles. Mayor Bell asks County Supervisors for relief, but no decision reported yet.
Building permits issued in San Marino through July show a total valuation of 3,806,113.75 for 1948, up from 1,705,823.72 in 1947, with thirteen new residences approved in July totaling 312,500 and two commercial structures plus 21 remodels valued at 436,083 for the month.
Appointed manager of the newly opened Pasadena agency for California Western States Life Insurance Company is Clif ford H. Fowler of 1675 Euclid avenue. Fowler comes to the Pasadena office from Los Angeles where he has led the Los Angeles Paramount agency for two years. He has 27 years in the insurance business across many states.
Report notes a big name truck in heavy traffic straddling a white line and a left turn without signaling. The piece commends Roger Duke and the recreation commission and praises Howard and assistants for handling a real program this year.
City Council raises top salaries amid police and fire department reorganization. Chief Glenn F. McClung gains $150 monthly to $600 with authority over both departments. Captain G E Orwine increases to $375 monthly. Fire platoon captains John A Fennikoh and Felix Withbrodt see salaries rise to $350.
William John Keiley aged 78 father of Anthony J. Keiley died of a heart attack at his son's home 425 Winthrop Avenue on Tuesday morning August 3 He had come to California three months earlier after his wife died in Chicago and had been living with his son Wendell Cabot and Sons Pasadena announced funeral plans not yet set
City Council awarded a contract to Motorola Company of Los Angeles to furnish police radio equipment for about 10000. The equipment is used in Pasadena and Los Angeles. Installation and set ups for motorcycles quoted at 9436. Installation starts at once with a new FCC frequency assigned in October.
Councilman Carson W Ide has notified federal draft officials he will be available to serve. He previously served on the local draft board in World War II and remained until duties moved to the Pasadena area. Officials asked if he could be counted on and he agreed to donate his time if needed. Definite assignments will be announced later this month.
Mayor Clark E. Bell announced a study progress toward automatic traffic signals on Huntington drive. The tentative plan calls for six intersections to receive signals including Granada Virginia San Marino avenues Delmar Winston and San Gabriel boulevard. Cooperative funding and multi-city approval are required for Winston and Huntington drive and San Gabriel boulevard signals.
Kenneth F. White a Occidental College graduate and San Marino Community Church vice principal and glee club director has been elected choir director. Roy E. Bolstad announces the appointment while noting White’s extensive work with Los Angeles choral groups and Glen dale church music leadership. The church plans to continue and enrich five choirs as the search for an organist proceeds with church committee members aiding the selection.
Harry G. Skinner announces the sale of Oak Knoll Pharmacy at Huntington Drive and Chelsea to M. R. Swall who has run the prescription department for five years. Skinner and wife plan a long rest but will return to the drive after. Swall will keep existing policy and staff. no changes to operations.
