Burglary Strikes Los Robles Home During OneHour Absence

Clothing jewelry bedspreads and watches taken from the residence of Thomas S. Steele at 2095 Los Robles Saturday night between 8 and 9 pm. Entry may have been via an unlocked window screen or by reaching through the front door peek hole. The Steeles were away only an hour and $650 in cash plus assorted items vanished. Police found no fingerprints or clues to the method of entry, marking the first burglary of the summer vacation period.

Jezebel Starlet From San Marinan Captures Fame

An 18 year old San Marinan Alice Clancey who attended Pasadena High School was cast as Julie in Jezebel with Bette Davis. Her breakout role earned praise from Warner Bros and boosted her rising film career. She later appeared in Gold Degers of Paris and a new project titled BEN. She is the daughter of Mrs. Philip Clancey.

First Lieutenant R. E. Battles of the Infantry Reserve trains at Camp John P. Pryor Presidio of Monterey with CMTC San Marinan candidates. The camp at Monterey runs until disbandment on Saturday August 6. Cadets study drill marksmanship tactics and military subjects to build character and citizenship.

New Residents Join Growing San Marino Community

Nine new families move into San Marino this week with five occupying recently built homes. Notable arrivals include Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Fundenberg at 1603 Charlton Road and Dr. and Mrs. H. M. Cronshey Baby Boy Born in Glendale

Mr and Mrs George H Cronshey Jr announce the birth of a son named Michael George Cronshey at Physicians and Surgeons Hospital in Glendale on Sunday after noon July 31. The baby weighs seven and a half pounds and the family home is 2985 Clarence. Mrs Cronshey, formerly Marian Herbert, is active in San Marino civic life and chaired the Sports Guild of the San Marino Woman's Club.

Hervey Porter Dies After Long Illness in California

Hervey Meek Porter died Friday at his Palmdale home after a long illness. He had lived at 1930 Los Robles avenue, San Marino, before moving away five months ago. Funeral services were held Tuesday in the Tur ner, Stevens and Berry chapel with Dr. James T. Mordy officiating. Porter, a retired businessman and former South Pasadena school board member, helped build the Percival Porter Co. investment firm with his father-in-law after starting as a lawyer in Des Moines.

The Blue Boy in Huntington Art Collection

The Blue Boy remains the Huntington collection’s most popular portrait. Painted around 1769 70 for Master Jonathan Buttall the canvas shows a blue satin outfit with silver braid and a black hat. Huntington acquired it in 1921 after long exhibition history in Grosvenor House and national galleries.

Ben McKesson Reaches Final in Local Soap Box Derby

San Marino boy Ben McKesson age 12, son of Mr and Mrs William B McKesson, finished among twelve finalists in the Los Angeles Daily News soap box derby finals on Stocker boulevard. His tin “Silver Streak” clocked 41 seconds for one block. Glendale’s Bob Holmes won and advances to Akron. Burrell De Vos also ran heats and earned a watch.

Playground Attendance Reaches High Mark in San Marino

The San Marino playground program closes with 300 plus attendees for a day of races, skits, and an ice cream feed. Staff of six instructors led by Ray Bryce organized events for all ages, averaging 250 daily participants throughout the season. Shields were awarded for junior and senior tennis, badminton, ping pong, checkers, and carroms, as well as chorus and dramatic skits by kindergarteners.

Sales Tax Repeal Question To Be Aired Tuesday

Parents in San Marino and South Pasadena will hear a talk Tuesday August 9 at 9 a.m. in the South Pasadena Board of Education building. Mary Parker Bort a Los Angeles County speaker on opposing the repeal will discuss the tax’s role in funding schools and how repeal could raise property taxes. Local PTA leaders invited include Mrs. James R. Deering and other club heads.
