One of the year’s key meetings is slated for Wednesday night at City Hall to hear proposals for two church structures and to set the upcoming tax rate and funding. Bids will also be opened for ornamental street lighting on Mission Street.
Eight San Marino Boy Scouts from Camp Cherry Valley on Catalina Island return July 26 after a trip on July 17 from Pasadena aboard the Betty O to Avalon. Scouts from Troops I II III earned merit badges including Life Saving Public Health and Leathercraft. Jerry Jones nears Gold Palm with ten merit badges. Officers of the Day named from San Marino earned honor.
The Huntington Library in San Francisco displays a compact exhibit noting the city’s growth from Spanish frontier outpost to American metropolis. It features Vancouver’s Voyage of Discovery first edition from 1798, coast charts, letters of 1830s and 1840s settlers, Soule’s 1855 Annals, and a diary entry from John Hovey about 1849, with a spotlight on Sutter’s Mill and emigration.

The San Marino Public Library invites children to join a Vacation Reading Club. Members read six books from sections on a Treasure Island chart such as The Court of Europe and the Hall of the West. New members are welcome until August 25 and must submit a short report after reading.
The San Marino school budget for the 1939 1940 year passed at a public hearing in the Huntington School superintendent's office. The district tax rate remains under 3 50 per hundred as more children qualify for elementary schooling. The Board of Trustees conducted the meeting with Dr Edward Morissey and C W Cornel present.
The San Gabriel Artists Guild presents August exhibition of oil paintings etchings and sculpture by the Painters and Sculptors Club of Los Angeles founded in 1923. Notable Southern California artists show works as the San Gabriel Fiesta is planned for September 2 3 and 4 with a fiesta tea on Sunday September 3 and local Chamber of Commerce costuming plans.
Governor Culbert L. Olson explains the veto of Assembly Bill No. 2256 which would have allowed San Marino to vote on leaving the South Pasadena High School district. He says action should wait for population growth in both communities. The bill passed the Assembly and Senate before his veto.
A three unit Spanish Mediterranean building at Huntington drive and Del Mar is ready for occupancy. The center houses Irene Richardson’s House of Beauty at 2516 Huntington drive and a San Gabriel relocation. Contractor A K Leatherwood reports reinforced grout lock brick masonry and a 58 by 60 foot rear parking area.
Charles E. Bent spoke at the San Marino Rotary Club luncheon at Hotel Huntington. He marked his thirtieth year in Rotary, recalled his Los Angeles charter member ties, praised San Marino as a fine community, and outlined four inspirations guiding his Rotary service, emphasizing public service and human welfare over personal gain. He noted Rotary's democracy and spirit, drawing parallels to his England visit. The talk stressed patience, good will, and steady growth in service.
The Hunting ton Summer Playschool session closed with a grand climax a staged play Sir Richard Serves His Queen and a 300 strong audience. Ray Bryce awarded winners in races and ice cream treats delighted attendees as numerous children excelled in potato, peanut and crab races with multiple first place finishes by June Chapman Joan Reynolds Walter Gschwind and Eric Gschwind among others. Tennis and badminton classes continue under Bryce and Lipke with girls sessions moved to Friday mornings.
Police alert Ridgeway road residents after a scottie owned by W. C. Bescherman of 2477 Ridgeway road died of rabies at a Pasadena veterinary clinic on Friday afternoon. Neighbors are advised to monitor their dogs to prevent an outbreak of the disease.
Citizens and organizations circulate four petitions this week asking the City Council to call a bond election not exceeding 100000 to build a permanent library on the Huntington West site. The current library serves 3659 patrons with 8420 monthly loans, while storage and crowding push for expansion.
Work started Tuesday on a $63,000 WPA concrete grandstand at Roosevelt Field, South Pasadena High School. Architect Theodore C. Kistner designed it to sit on the 50 yard line on the west field, with 218 feet length, 17 tiers, and a 2,100 spectator capacity. Toilets will be built underneath with future shower plans.
The Huntington School grounds saw a hard fought softball game as 20-30 Club edged Our Market 10-2. Dick Biles hit the key homer with fast pitching and sharp defense aided by the veterans and ex-high school players amid lively crowd banter and ongoing league play notes.
