Cancer grant boosts community care at LA center

Dr Cary Presant, principal investigator for Community Clinical Oncology at the Los Angeles Oncologic Institute, announced a National Cancer Institute grant enabling LACI to deliver modern cancer care in a community hospital. AFS Sponsors Intercultural Program Americans Abroad for 20 Students

AFS San Marino marks a second year of the Americans Abroad intercultural program with 20 San Marino high school students departing in late June for six weeks in locations including Austria Greece and Norway. Participants include McCall Cameron Julie Condie Bob Dial and others plus three one year students and host families saluted at a bon voyage dinner hosted by the Drez family.

Registration Time At San Marino High

James E. Stratton, assistant principal instruction at San Marino High School, says registration appointments are scheduled through August 16 for all SMHS sophomores juniors and seniors. Freshmen register August 30 with packets available in the counseling office and must be completed before counselor meetings. Call 304-0787 to book an appointment. During sessions students will register for 1990 91 classes and review transcripts.

San Marino Safety Tax Renewal Heads to Nov 6 Ballot

City Council adopted Ordinance 982 on second reading for a public safety tax renewal to fund paramedic services police protection and fire protection. The measure seeks a two thirds vote at the November 6 statewide ballot and runs through 1995 with annual increases. Residents may submit opposing arguments by August 6. The city also approved pre zoning for unincorporated county territory at San Gabriel Boulevard and Huntington Drive.

New Police Device Tracks Stolen Autos in LA Area

The San Marino Police Department joins Los Angeles agencies with a stolen vehicle recovery device called LoJack. Installed in patrol cars, it tracks homing signals from vehicles equipped with transmitters. Part of the Stolen Vehicle Recovery Network SVRN the system aims to recover stolen cars after theft. Signals cover county wide and cross city borders enabling adjacent units to pursue stolen vehicles.

Mother-Daughter Archaeology Team Heads for Honduran Dig

Susan Boyle an English teacher and her daughter Shelley Boyle plan a field excavation at Yarumela Honduras. Sponsored by a grant from Earthwatch magazine the pair will join an archaeological dig alongside university students to explore ancient cultural influences in the region.

School Board Will Meet Aug 15 to Fill Bowes Vacancy
