San Marino and South Pasadena Rotary clubs invite Sergey Kozlov research scholar from University of Irvine Extension to discuss Russia politics and post Cold War future. Kozlov, director of languages at Moscow School 1832, has taught in Birmingham and Tripoli, with a global Rotary exchange focus.
San Marino City Council will convene an adjourned regular meeting on Saturday August 3 at 8 am. The agenda includes adopting a resolution to call a special election to consolidate with the November 5 statewide General Election and readopt the Utility Users Tax. A study session on the Emergency Operations Center is planned and the public may address the council. The next regular meeting is August 14 at 7 30 pm.
Standard & Poor's rated San Marino Unified School District's first series General Obligation Bonds AA, placing it among seven California districts and signaling prestige plus potential savings. With a 25 year $34.33 million bond program, district taxpayers could save about $650,000 in interest costs, aided by favorable economic and demographic factors and a historically positive operating budget.
Anne and Will Cathcart recount the July 27 fire aboard the S S Universe Explorer during an Inside Passage cruise. Five crewmembers died, seventy six were injured, and passengers prepared to abandon ship as the alarm sounded at 3 00 a m.
Pasadena City College prevailed in a State Court of Appeal ruling upholding its 1991 hiring of a Japanese ethnicity candidate over Leon Waszak. Waszak claimed reverse discrimination, a Los Angeles Superior Court verdict found race a motivator, but the appellate court affirmed PCC’s hiring process and denied Waszak back pay and fees. Dr. James Kessler commented on the decision.
ASB leaders from San Marino High School attended a four day CA DA leadership conference at UC Santa Barbara with about 200 student council members from 20 schools. They were split into 15 councils for intensive leadership labs focusing on team building, communication, and defining leadership.
Four hundred high school juniors and seniors chosen for a summer program attend lectures on American politics and media influence during the 1996 Republican National Convention in San Diego. Participants include three classmates from Mayfield Senior School. The course runs July 21 to August 17 with sections on politics and journalism.
The San Marino Chamber of Commerce announced a Community Fair for October 3 in Lacy Park at its July meeting. Secretary Peggy Class said the event will be similar to last year with local businesses and organizations setting up tabletop displays at the west end, plus entertainment and children’s games, though details remain to be finalized.
San Marino celebrates the restoration of its first fire truck, a 1923 American LaFrance. Frank Medlock led months of work at the fire house with the support of the department. Chuck Murchie credits Medlock as the driving force behind the project. The truck, once sold to Hodges in the 1950s and donated back after his 1974 death, underwent piston ring replacement, reseating valves, cylinder repairs, and modern nickel plating. Rechroming and bearing resurfacing were performed by local shops El Monte Plating and Electronic Chrome, with repainting by South Pasadena Auto Body.
Sandy Fastnow of San Marino Girl Scouts House explains the Twilight Camp in Lacy Park teaches outdoor skills such as cooking, tenting, knot tying, knife handling, fire safety, dress, and manners. The program draws 112 girls this year, rising thanks to limited camps and Lacy Park’s reputation within Mount Wilson Vista Council.
