City Bought First Fire Truck 78 Years Ago Today
In 1922 San Marino voters approved a bond to fund the first fire truck for the nine year old city. Old No 1, a 750 gallon per minute pumper from American La France, arrived after a 1923 check for 13 000. Its first call—saving no loss from a corn stalk fire—came with Chief Chester Copley supervising a growing department and a busy day including a Pacific Electric bridge fire. Mayor Richard H Lacy later supervised many tests of the new engine.
