The Monk Gibson rape and murder case in the Thirty-seventh district court extends into next week as the state likely finishes presenting witnesses. The trial draws intense public focus on race prejudice and the alleged 15 to 17 year old defendant, who appears calm amid the courtroom drama.
A wagonload of fireworks owned by Charles Heim and pulled by a gray mule was touched off by a Black boy who tossed a lit cigarette into it in Houston on December 16. The explosion lit Roman candles and wheels as the mule sprinted, ending with the mule singed from tail to nose once it halted.
Chicago plans to maintain a standing army of labor for strikes with over 180000 registered workers. The Chicago Employers association reports employment bureaus now operate in major cities and a clearing house will coordinate across towns to fill strike vacancies. A legal department will track court decisions and injunctions nationwide.
Special to The Light notes that adoption of the metric system by Britain or the United States would prompt global shifts. Porto Rico and the Philippines already use it, and German exporters benefit from it in South America. Experts say the world will soon converge on an international system of weights and measures making the US system unlikely to become universal.
In Austin Texas on December 16 a Fifty third district court jury found T M Glascow and C M Winters guilty. Glascow received two years and Winters four years in the penitentiary. Ed Hynds and W O Taylor remain jailed and will not be tried until next term. The defendants allegedly fleeced Co P Guest of Rogers Texas of 2000 dollars by staging a fraudulent foot race and recovering 1700 of the cash. Glascow is from Cleburne and Winters from St Louis. They were reindicted for theft over 50 after dismissal of swindling charges.
Friends of Midshipman Meriwether of Louisiana denounce Secretary Bonaparte for a bitter reprimand. They consider Meriwether the victim of a custom used by trial judges and discuss a formal protest to the president. The Daily States calls the reprimand unwarranted and undeserved.
Mme Chambers demonstrates perfected bust developing at Fant Building opposite Peck's, showcasing refined sculpting technique and artistry from her studio.
In Washington a lobby representing mining interests is charged with trying to derail a bill for admitting New Mexico and Arizona as one state with Oklahoma and Indian Territory. Senator Beveridge, head of the territories committee, says the lobby is pressing to defeat the measure. Continued on Page Two.
A blaze last night gutted the Bering Cortez warehouse, destroying thousands of cook stoves, several hundred kegs of nails and other hardware. The fire alarm rang only as the building neared total loss. Estimated damage is 65000 dollars, largely insured.
