Special to the Sunday Light from El Paso Texas: Victoriano Laiba, a ranch worker eight miles from the city, mortally wounds his sweetheart Sarah Fianes at her home and then commits suicide with a Colt six shooter. Laiba had been an ardent suitor but had been rejected. the girl had earlier been wounded by another jealous lover a year before.
The Winthrop faction of the Republican party in Bexar County held primaries across almost all city precincts and selected delegates to the county convention at Mission Garden next Wednesday at 11. Delegates were instructed to vote as a unit for Lyon as state chairman, and to support Lyon’s re election. A long list of delegates and two year chairmanships across precincts 1 through 32 is provided.
Over 250 Republicans from Green and Hawley factions met at old Convention Hall to select delegates for the county convention on August 26 at New Market. Dr J F Walton elected temporary chairman with C G Clifford as secretary. A 12 member committee named delegates including George Schmidt, G W Huth, Albert Meyer and many others. Dr Robinson endorsed as county chairman for two years. Meeting adjourned after routine business.
Washington Aug 23 The presidents casual talk with Cecil Lyon of Texas sparked wide consternation. Roosevelt expressed strong views on southern republicanism and nomination politics revealing his displeasure at factions. Austin August 23 Chairman R Henderson of the Democratic Executive Committee issues call to members for a convention next Saturday at 12 o'clock at the courthouse. Purpose to settle the contest between Lee J. Rountree of Georgetown and D W Faubion of Leander for the Democratic nomination in the state senate district. Both claim the nomination.
A New York correspondent cites Republican senators representatives and other leaders saying the coming congressional campaign hinges on arousing Republican voters in many sections. In talks from Oyster Bay to political headquarters, the theme is concern that without full GOP strength the next House could turn Democratic.
Washington Aug 28 Representative Eddy of Minnesota an insurgent on the Cuban reciprocity bill remains opposed to the president's policy. He argues Cuba will seek annexation if reciprocity fails and declares we owe Cuba no moral political or financial debt after fighting for its independence and investing blood and money.
Austin August 23 Comptroller R M Love received a telegram from Miss Anna Swann an attaché in the Comptroller’s department at Tyler announcing the death of Mrs Swann mother of Miss Swann which occurred last night at 11 o clock The funeral was held this evening.
The Texas educational department released a full census and apportionment for the 1902 1903 school year breaking down white and colored children by county and district type. It lists totals for male and female students over eight and under seventeen, including independent and community counties. Grand totals for state enrollment are provided.
New York reports that a Packers combine plan to form a merchants distributing company will abolish numerous branch houses and cut hundreds of jobs. Armour & Co. and Cudahy Packing Co. push the merger to centralize wholesale markets in cities worldwide. The new firm will market all products, with packers as stockholders and control, promising savings of hundreds of thousands yearly.
Charters filed yesterday in Austin list multiple corporations with various capitals and purposes. Notable entries include The Liberty Petroleum Company of Galveston capital 10000 to lease land and prospect for oil. State Treasurer J. F. Robbing reports widespread drought on return from Wilbarger county. He warns farmers will not profit as grass is dry enough to burn with a spark. In Hall county, about a hundred miles north, rain has blessed farmers and commerce. districts near Wilbarger remain desolate.
In Boston Aug 23 a leading Republican says party factions press for tariff revision. Calls to repeal duties on hides and leather grow urgent as Shoe and Leather industry officials outline immediate agitation once Congress convenes. Western tanners report sharp cost rises while hides and leather fetch modest gains. New England Free Hide association plans political action to back lawmakers who will remove the duty.
Austin August 23 Tax rolls for Archer De Witt Borden and Garza counties show total valuations of 2,455,680 6,742,050 1,055,819 and 634,235 with year over year increases of 251,860 105,875 119,375 and 179,485 respectively Comptroller Love praises accuracy of the rolls and tax collectors statewide.

Kk M Vaughn a Hillsboro attorney is in Austin on business with the Attorney General's department. J W Gallaway from Houston is here on business with state departments.
