Charles Fahey of the Sunset reports a Louisiana freight quarantine update. A telegram from C. K. Dunlap in Houston states blast-bound freight for Calcasieu parish may proceed if accompanied by a certificate proving the freight has not been in infected territory.
Special to The Light from El Paso Texas August 5 reports a heated congressional race with J D Cunningham of Abilene active in the district while Congressman Smith is inactive. Zach Cobb of El Paso is a probable candidate and a joint debate in the eastern district is possible.
The executive committee led by W. A. Shaw of Dallas met in Waco to organize for next week's state farmers union gathering. A large attendance is anticipated at the event. Carload front doors. ED. STEVES & SONS.
Fever cases rise to 505 with 97 deaths and 91 sub foci as Archbishop Chapelle is among the victims. Public health officials plan for federal control Monday with Dr. J. H. White leading local efforts while militia withdraws and a revenue cutter enforces quarantine.

Houston reports State Health Officer Brumby in New Orleans says parish quarantine lines grow tighter toward New Orleans amid disorganized border defenses. He notes no yellow fever in Texas as of tonight per State Health Officer Tabor, who believes each day reduces Texas risk of the plague.
Representatives of Texas railroads met Adjutant General Hulen at Austin on Aug 5 to hash out how troops will be moved to and from Camp Mabry. The lines confirmed a shared plan approving 25 roads to handle the various companies with a satisfactory basis agreed.

Roston La Aug 5 Bob Burton a negro felon was hanged in the Lincoln parish jail yard at 1 06 pm for assault with intent. Sheriff L C Gahagan three physicians and three ministers attended. Burton confessed to entered eighty nine houses over eight years and warned others. He said he was ready to die and urged other negroes to change.
Waco Texas August 5 Sank Majors a black man sentenced to death for criminally assaulting a white woman July 11 was granted a new trial by Judge Surratt of the Nineteenth district court. The case is set for next Friday. Local residents express great disappointment.
Hillsboro Texas August 5 sick and despondent David Knisely a day transfer man for the American Express company walked into the depot office and fired a 38 caliber revolver at his temple. He was an expense clerk in the Chicago office who had obtained a transfer on a physician’s advice claiming he had consumption and could not live in Chicago.
Austin Texas August 5 the comptroller today sent to the different assessors throughout the state an official abstract of the public land titles so that correct tax rolls may be made.
The Galveston case of Tom Knipe a former employee of A. A. Bwrack a photographer led to a trap set by the Galveston city marshal. Knipe was arrested on a theft charge exceeding $50 and about $150 worth of photographic paraphernalia was recovered. Sheriff Tobin’s office looked like a studio as officers anticipated an operator behind a camera.
Washington announces a forthcoming Navy and Army led test off Andy Hook to gauge hull resistance of a newly built Brooklyn yard battleship model. High explosives will be detonated near the hull while instruments record water shock effects at set depths.
Eagle Pass Tex Aug 5 1923 At 2 30 pm a spark from a switch engine set fire to the southern Pacific wooden trestle between Eagle Pass and C P Diaz The blaze destroyed over 800 feet of the structure suspending rail traffic for the line The Sunset loss is about 10000 with a week or more to rebuild Two bridge gangs were sent to rush new trestle work and passengers to Mexico and US points were transferred via the wagon bridge until repairs are finished Transportation disruption and repair plans dominate the report.
The $50,000 San Antonio school bond proposal was defeated by 481 votes cast with 264 in favor and 217 against. Leaders labeled the result a victory for the public school system, while officials admitted insufficient publicity.
Special dispatch from Washington reports Wu Ting Fang, former Chinese minister, given direct throne authority to negotiate a renewal of the exclusion treaty with the United States. He supersedes Sit Chentung Liang Cheng for now and is accused by some of fomenting commercial discontent to favor China in the deal.
H L Mays, a Black man, charged with the unprovoked murder of Leo Woods in Sunset's east yards, was arraigned before Justice Umscheid. He waived examination and was remanded to jail without bond to await the October grand jury.
The Twenty-sixth Infantry band performed a two hour concert at Milam Square from 8 to 10 PM drawing about two thousand spectators. The event featured a varied musical program and showcased local interest in military band performances.
