Tax Committee Hearings On Tax System In Texas
Tax hearings take place at El Torticano Hotel focusing on tax collections and data processing. Ken Quevreaux chair of the taxable property and exemptions advisory group urges broadening tax bases, including zoning in Boy Scouts and YMCA to the tax rolls. A study estimates $200 million extra revenue from taxing statutorily exempted property, enabling rate cuts and faster tax equalization. Citizens seek tighter collection rules and a state agency to appraise property. The committee plans a formal report and recommendation on the ad valorem tax to the governor and legislature in early 1972.
