Synthetic Tires Show Weakness in State Tests
In Indianapolis on Sept 28 the state department of public safety reported early results from tests on synthetic tires used on state police autos. About one third of 158 tires failed before 1500 miles, with the best reaching under 1000 miles. One tire blistered after 60 miles and a recurring heat-friction problem caused excessive wear at higher speeds. Inner tubes were not tested, and the tires tested were synthetic rather than reclaimed.
