Testimony in Drowning Case Sparks Preliminary Hearing
Hampton Washington September 22. The testimony to be offered for and against Prof Elisha Kent Kane was definitely indicated today as preparations were seen for his preliminary hearing on a charge of murdering his wife. Coroner George K. WannerSlice's report filed yesterday provided the first definite information of evidence. The wife’s mother testified to letters signed Betty identifying the writer as Elizabeth H. Dahl of New York. The coroner said the letters were important in returning a murder verdict. Mrs Photbs Harris, 70, said her daughter had written the letters but that quotes from them gave a wrong impression. She described an alleged attachment between Mrs Dahl and Prof Kane but said it had ended. Her daughter believed in the innocence of the accused man and would stand by him in his trial though now engaged to another man. Conflicting with this claim were statements of Mr and Mrs W G Graham, made at the coroner's inquest. Graham testified his daughter had told him she feared something might happen, but she would die before this woman shall have him. Mrs Graham spoke of a marriage relationship marred by the husband’s alleged attachment to a woman named Hetty. She described letters alleging the man longed to be rid of his wife and come to Hetty, a divorced woman who lived with him in camp before he went to sea.
