Counties Slow to Report Texas Tax Rolls for 1907

In Austin Texas on September 2 many Texas counties have not submitted their 1907 tax rolls to the comptroller's department. Only about half the counties have filed so far and October 1 is the target date. Two counties reported yesterday Trinity with 5 694 781 valuation vs 5 467 890 estimated and Donley with 38 841 369 valuation vs 2 840 330 estimated.

Murder Draws 99 Years for 2 Youths

Hatenton Ga Sept 2 The verdict in the murder case against Albert and Porter Jones was guilty with a mercy recommendation. Judge Lewis sentenced the boys to lengthy imprisonment and set a hearing date for a new trial. The crime involved Robert F Adams, a Putnam county planter, and stemmed from a longstanding family feud. Porter Jones, 41, and an unnamed co-defendant were involved in the brutal killing.

Rules on Local Option Elections

Special to The Light from Austin Texas notes attorney general's ruling on Grayson county. If Grayson votes against prohibition in local option elections, prohibition areas revert to county wide prohibition with 39 precincts. The department also states that a county wide prohibition election does not repeal local option in any precinct already voting against prohibition under a prior election.

In Waco Texas on September 21, poll tax cases go to trial in county court drawing public interest. Indictments were returned after a special grand jury session in about twenty cases. Postal Manager Goes With 10000 Shortage Mystery

Hearst Leased Wire reports in New Orleans that Ted Robert Petrich, former manager at a local postal telegraph office, is missing with a shortage cited from 4043 up to more than 10000 dollars. An affidavit was issued by district superintendent W A Porteous charging embezzlement, while Petrich’s son N J Petrich says the loss may exceed 10000 dollars. Petrich previously served as secretary of the Atlanta baseball team in the Southern League and worked with Western Union in Atlanta.

Woman's Slayer Hears His Doom in Murder Trial

Frank Constantine, convicted of fatally slashing Mrs. Arthur W. Gentry in January 1906, was sentenced to life imprisonment. The verdict shocked a crowded Chicago courtroom as jurors returned while judge prepared to adjourn. Arrest Woman for Killing Teacher in Chicago

Police arrested Miss Thelma Metmet in Chicago in connection with the murder of Mrs. Lian White Grant, the teacher found strangled. Williams, a Black man, is sought for knowledge of the death and allegedly sent Metmet a letter asking to meet at his home on Frederick Place.

FARMERS QUARREL ENDS IN SLAYING NEAR RENTON
