Judge Hopkins to testify in election case at Edinburg
Corpus Christi September 14 Judge W R Hopkins one of forty one judges named as conspirators in alleged meddling with the 1914 general election testified for hours in his own defense. He denied any participation in the election and said the earliest hearing for a habeas writ would be next week in Hidalgo or nearby. The cross examination questioned his role and the defense sought a writ from independent authorities.

Judge comments on habeas corpus writ and contempt claim
The judge described the grand jury conduct as potentially contemptuous but later dismissed that view. He noted the Acebo habeas corpus writ was proper with a valid affidavit and would be compelled to issue if required. A question arose about statements affecting Acebo’s voting and possession of pall tax receipts, which the judge did not recall.
