Storm Lashes Texas Valley Towns Injuring Dozens

Course of Hurricane in Texas Traced

The tropical hurricane moved from the Gulf of Mexico just south of east and followed a nearly straight path inland. It swept a several hundred mile arc from Freeport to near Brownsville, with its center inland between Brownsville and Corpus Christi. Devastating winds centered near Harlingen caused severe damage across lower Rio Grande towns as the storm moved northward.

Harlingen Hurricane Wrecks Town Tops Buildings

A Harlingen hurricane battered the town with winds over 100 miles an hour. Part of the hotel roof caved in and the railway station roof tore off while debris filled streets. A temporary hospital was set up in the Reese Wil Mond Hotel to treat about 50 injured as relief workers sifted debris for victims.

Air travel resumes into stormed Lower Rio Grande valley

Eighteen passengers mostly from San Antonia and Texas cities fled to Winburn field in two American Airways planes to reach the storm devastated Lower Rio Grande valley. Water stood a foot and a half at Brownsville airport, but pilots expected receding water to allow landings by late afternoon. Plane from McAllen reported water receding there while others continued reconnaissance flights over the valley.
